8/12/19

Standing 6-foot-4, 225 pounds with a strong, athletic frame, Mattison entered the All-Star game with the score tied and runners on first and second base. From a high three-quarter slot with compact arm action he pumped gas at 92-96 mph, while also showing a below average 79-80 mph breaking ball. He strides short, throws against a firm front side and finishes upright. An intense competitor, Mattison made 15 starts and logged 80 innings with a 3.47 ERA as a sophomore for the Bulldogs. He will return to the weekend rotation this spring and could be selected early on Day Two with improvements to both his breaking ball and overall command. (Seifert)

8/15/18

Mattison has come a long way since he first put himself on the map at the 2015 PBR New York State Games. He still stands 6’4 with an impressive and projectable pitchers frame but his body has matured to a stronger, more developed 225 pounds. With the added strength he demonstrates consistent balance and body control with his actions. The delivery is low effort and simple, with clean arm action. His landing has improved so there’s better direction towards the catcher and more efficient rotation around the front hip. Now the fastball that formerly sat 84-85 mph and peaked at 87 is comfortably sitting 89-92 and topping at 93. Pitches to both sides of the plate with his fastball but did show the tendency to pull/cut it out of the zone when working glove side. Also flashed an average curveball with 10/4 shape at 74-76 mph and changeup at 79-83. Presently the changeup is his best secondary offering with good hand speed and consistent fade. Maintains a high release on all of his offerings. Projects to have at least average command in the future. Right now uses all three pitches with more control than pure command. Establishing a reliable ‘K’ pitch will be important for his development moving forward. Mattison had a terrific freshman season for Bryant in 2018 but he could just be scratching the surface of what he’s capable of. With more time to refine his command and get stronger, don’t be surprised to see big improvements out of him next spring.

5/15/17

6-foot-4 215 power frame. Came in the game in relief- The fastball has plus life at 90-91 MPH and the spin pitch is slurvy at 73-74 mph. Slight pause in the delivery at the top of the lift and good direction to the plate. Potential draft candidate with more in the tank and low mileage. Very good athlete.

7/08/15

Pitching - young with a tremendous pitchers frame at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds. The RHP sat 84-85 MPH, topping 87 with more in the tank. Curveball featured slurve like tendencies with some 10/4 action, when he got in front it had nasty late bite. Featured a straight change that held its location at 74 MPH. Major upside. Fielding/HItting - Athletic body frame. Good hand and glove action, stays deep in the field but has a quick transition to get rid of the ball, uses a low-3/4 arm slot and fairly accurate with throws even though he recoils slightly after release, average range but can improve with more lateral movement. At the plate hitter shows good potential. Starts with a relaxed and balanced position and upon pitch takes a long stride to the ball, has a very strong and compact swing with good hand movement through the zone, gets full extension and finishes at an athletic, balanced position.
