Sutherland stands a lean 5-foot-10, 165-pounds with more weight to come as he enters into his college years. Offensively- Upright approach in the box, long stride for timing. Short to the ball with a flat barrel through contact, his extension is short through his finish. Exit velocity peaked at 80 MPH. Defensively- Gets to the ball upright, open glove, throws from a mid-3/4 slot, 78 MPH arm-strength with carry to the bag. Pitching- Simple delivery, knee lift to the belt, fastball sits 77-81 MPH from a mid-3/4 slot. Curveball has sweeping shape, 70-71 mph. Changeup 72 with fade and fastball hand-speed.
WNY Travel Workout (January 16, 2017)
Sutherland stands at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds. Was timed from home to first base in 4.5 seconds. Offensively- Has an upright stance that is slightly open. Hands are close to body and aligned at shoulder height. Small leg kick that lands with stance closed. Back leg sinks and weight drives forward throughout swing. Front knee cracks. Extension through contact on an uphill swing plane. Had an exit velocity of 76 MPH off of the tee. Defensively- Moves to ball with light feet. Sets up with a wide base and slight knee bend. Most bend occurs at waist and catches ball in front of body. Immediately transfers ball to throwing position. Uses a powerful crossover step to gain ground towards target. Had a throwing velocity of 76 MPH across the diamond. Pitching- Begins with feet at shoulder width on first base side of rubber. Legs are straight with hands in front of chin. Small side step as right foot pivots onto rubber. Knee lift comes just above waist height at balance point. Average stride length that lands in line with home plate. Full arm circle on backside. Throws with a low ¾ arm slot, although elbow is low. Fastball topped out at 75-77 MPH, while also spinning a curveball at 69-70 MPH.
