Shows quick hands into the hitting zone with a level barrel path throughout into a high two-handed finish. Demonstrated line drive ability up the middle and to the pull side during batting practice round. Recorded an exit velocity of 81 MPH. Defensively- Good approach and footwork getting to and underneath the baseball. Shows a good long outfielder arm swing throwing downhill towards target. Fluid crow hop mechanics gaining ground throughout the movement. Was accurate on all throws and recorded a positional arm velocity of 78 MPH.
Preseason All-State (February 20, 2017)
Merkov stands in at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with a lean athletic frame. Ran a 7.55 – 60. Offensively- Righty sets up square to the pitcher with his feet just outside shoulder width. Shows an upright torso with his hands above his back shoulder using little pre-pitch bat movement prior to delivery. On pitch his trigger is a knee raise into a step forward while he brings his hands down and back up to get into his hitting position. Has a lot of extra movement during his trigger, would be easier to pick up timing with a smoother trigger back with the hands and a quieter step forward but he is able to repeat and be on time. Hands are quick to the zone but casts out a bit slowing them down. Still manages to get good upward barrel action throughout the hitting zone with a mid-body one handed finish. Good lower half during the swing allowing the entire body to get involved. Middle of the field line drive/fly ball results; exit velocity of 82 MPH. Defensively- Good athletic footwork towards baseball. Gains ground through the crow hop mechanic towards intended target. Shows good arm action and accuracy on throws. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 78 MPH.
