Last Chance Preview (October 30, 2016)

Yantz, a 2019 right-handed hitting third baseman/RHP, stands at 5-foot-5 and weighs a solid 155 pounds, ran a
7.88 60. Offensively- Starts with an upright slightly open base, hands in front of the back shoulder with a pre-pitch buggy whip action, with the barrel of the bat straight up and down. Initiates the swing with a pronounced lift of the front foot with an aggressive stride towards the pitcher, with the hands loaded back and above the back shoulder getting the barrel of the bat at a strong 45-degree angle ready to drive the ball. Displayed the ability to drive the ball from the pull side line to the opposite field line, showing quality extension and back spin on balls to the pull side gap. Recorded an exit velocity of 78 MPH. Defensively- Athletic movements to the ball with continuous movement with the feet. Fields the ball in front of the body, creating hops to the glove side, with short choppy steps to the ball. Funnels the ball to the chest where the transfer takes place. Transfer the ball in a circular motion creating a longer arm action rather than a thumbs down transfer which would help create a shorter more traditional shorter arm action for an infielder. Throws showed carry and good accuracy, with a registered arm velocity of 72 MPH. Pitching- Starts with the pivot foot all the way over to the third base side of the rubber while the lead foot is on the first base side with both toes pointed at a 45 degree angle from the catcher while both hands are held chin height. Gets to the gathered position with a slight step towards the first base line, then gives a stutter step, while the pivot foot drags to the center of the rubber while the hands drop slightly to chest height where separation takes place getting some tilt to the shoulders as well. Sticks the landing well, staying firm with the front side while the toe gets slightly open to the glove side. Clean long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball, showing a ton of movement with a cutting action, topped out at 71 MPH. Showed an ability to work the fastball to both corners as well as staying in the lower third of the zone. Pulled the front side a bit, trying to stay on top of the curveball which caused some to backup, but at times showed an ability to throw the pitch with tight break and big depth with an 11-to-5 type of rotation with a top velocity of 62 MPH. The changeup showed quality depth with some arm side sink and registered a velocity of 60 MPH, a quality differential from the fastball.
