Comments
Spulnick sits in at 6-foot-2; 170 pounds with a tall lean athletic frame. Strong and runs well for body size, showing a 7.30 – 60 time (down from a 7.30 in Jan. 2016). Offensively-Simple approach being square at the pitcher with hands in front of back shoulder. On the pitch his trigger is a quiet toe touch with hands moving back slightly getting into a good hitting position. Quick with hands to the hitting zone with a good bat path through to his follow through. Good lower body rotation. Uses his total body and has some power potential showing an 86 mph exit velocity (+3 MPH from Jan. 2016; equals prior best). Had multiple hits in 3 games played in NYS Games. Defensively- Approaches ball off bat well. Makes good jumps and takes good routes to fly balls. Tends to take his time and has a long arm swing when fielding in Outfield. Will improve with more reps. Also listed as a 2B. Only played OF at NYS Games. Position velocity from outfield is 80 mph.
New York State Open ID (January 23, 2016)
Michael is a wiry 6-foot-2 170 pound INF/OF who ran a 7.33 60 and a 4.19 home to 1B. Offensively- Michael sets up in a balanced stance with his feet even. Bat barrel points to the ground behind his body before loading back and bring barrel to a 30 degree angle. Short stride, keeping his weight back with aggressive back foot/hip rotation. Can spin off his front side at times but did not see much of a negative effect here as his swing path was short into the zone with an assertive and up top finish. Good late acceleration through the zone with an exit velocity of 83 MPH. Middle of the field, line drive mentality. Defensively- Michael worked out in both the OF and INF. Covers ground with easy strides as an outfielder with a fundamental crowhop. Arm strength peaked at 80 MPH. On the infield, Michael starts in an upright postion, active with his feet. Can get the glove too far underneath at times but stays soft here. Uses some secondary shuffles before releasing. Arm strength clocked in at 75 MPH today.
Eastern NY All-Star Games (September 13, 2015)
Stands at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, with an athletic body build. Defensively – In the infield he has a good approach through the ball, with good hands, throws with a high 3/4 arm action, plays through the ball nicely, with some of range, and has accuracy on the target. As an outfielder, he has a nice approach through the ball, with good hands, throws with a 3/4 arm action, plays through the ball nicely and has accuracy on the target. Offensively - At the plate his setup is relaxed and balanced, short to no stride, with a back load. His hands are very compact and strong, swinging on an upward tilt plane with good full extension, with a shoulder finish through the ball. With his exit velo (86 MPH), he has the potential to put up numbers.
