Rising Stars (June 28, 2018)
Athletic build at 5-foot-8 140 pounds; the right-handed hitting MIF ran a 7.88 60. Hitting- Slightly open setup with feet just outside shoulder width; toe tap for timing with quiet hands. Explosive lower half with a compact stroke into the zone; line drive results. Raw exit velocity peaked at 71 MPH. Defensively- In the outfield; aggressive approach; fields the groundball outside the lead leg with a compressed crow hop into release; arm action is long with a peak velocity of 70 MPH. On the infield Stephens shows active actions up the middle; uses a side shuffle to move laterally, stays on the balls of his feet and is able to to make the play on the move and change arm angles; arm strength was 69 MPH across the diamond. Good feel for the position Pitching- High ¾ slot with a short take back. Fastball sat 68-69 MPH; CB was 61-62 with some 1-to-7 / 12-to-6 action. Mid chest leg drive with a consistent landing and follow through.
3/11/18
On the bump the righty has a slower tempo to his delivery with athletic actions. Rolls through his chest high leg lift into his drop and drive load. Arm action is compact as it moves through a high-¾ slot. Fastball has some arm side action to it, sitting 65-68 mph, topping at 69 mph. Worked primarily with the fastball, mixing in a few breaking balls. Showed developing feel for the offering that had more spin than break at 60-62 mph. A right-handed hitter that starts in a balanced stance. Uses a leg kick for timing as hands stay quiet/loose prior to swing decision. Path is level with noticeable barrel whip through the zone. Hands show present strength and twitch. A line drive hitter with gap abilities. Did a very nice job of staying inside the baseball, creating backspin to the middle of the field. Solid round of BP. In the infield feet work very well, creating rhythm and angles to play through the baseball more efficiently. Hands are soft and glove looks to be an above average tool for class. Arm is area for improvement.
Stephens has a thin frame at 5-foot-8, 140-pounds. He ran a 4.41 home to 1B. Offensively – Stephens sets up his feet shoulder length apart and slightly closed. He leans slightly forward and then loads back. Stephens’s hands set up high and behind his head and they move back at the load. He finishes with an elevated finish with an exit velocity of 74 MPH. Flashed some whip through the zone. Defensively – Stephens has great agility and gets to the ball quickly; smooth hands and transfer. He has an above average arm with a velocity of 67 MPH in the infield and 68 MPH in the outfield. Athletic actions that will only get better with maturity.
