Athletic, projectable frame with wiry build. 6-foot-1, 160-pounds. Offensively – Open stance with upright, athletic posture. Squares up to pitcher with low forward stride. Hands maintain subtle rhythm during load and stride. Smooth, balanced swing. Manipulated the barrel and showed gap to gap ability during BP. Hits against a firm front side with full hip rotation after contact. Defensively – Simple, mechanically sound footwork in the OF. Stays behind the ball with head down and over his glove hand. Gets into his exchange quickly. Redirects feet and uses a side shuffle to create momentum on throws. Clean, projectable arm action with ¾ release point. Loose, whippy finish to throws.
Unsigned Senior Showcase (October 30, 2016)
Kavanaugh stands in at 6-foot-1, 160-pounds with a tall lean athletic frame. Ran a 6.75 – 60, improved from his previous best recording of 7.05 in July 2015. Offensively- Righty sets up in an open stand with his feet just outside his shoulders. Knees are bent with his weight distributed on his back foot while his hands are held above his back shoulder. On pitch his trigger is a quiet step forward squaring up with the pitcher while his hands move back slightly into his hitting position. Good efficient lower body rotation getting whole body frame involved in swing. Quick hands to the hitting zone with a level bat path throughout into a high one handed finish. Covers the plate well and with added strength could be a gap to gap threat. Recorded an exit velocity of 73 MPH, with a previously best recorded at 82 MPH in July 2015. Defensively- Good footwork and approach to baseball. Can use more of a longer outfielder arm swing and focus on throwing down hill with aggressive footwork towards throwing target. Moves well left/right and shows fluid crow hop mechanics. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 77 MPH, 5 MPH faster than his previously best of 72 MPH in July 2015.
Capital District Open (July 29, 2015)
Stands an athletic 6-foot-0, 155-pounds. Showed good speed during his 60yd. dash at 7.05. Defensively- In the outfield he moved well to both sides, and showed some carry on his throws at 72mph. Showed clean transfers, to a mid 3/4 arm slot. Offensively- At the plate he starts slightly open with his hands shoulder at shoulder height. Short and quick load to get back to even. Hands drop slightly on his swing creating a slight drag, yet stays level and on top of the baseball. Showed good bat speed with his exit velo 82 mph, and the ability to hit line drives to all fields. Should have gap power as he gains strength and put on weight.
