April 2018
Downstate Unsigned Senior (October 21, 2017)
Richards, a 2018 left-handed hitting first baseman/RHP, stands at 6-foot-0 and weighs 210 pounds, ran a 7.80 60, which was 0.20 quicker than the previous event. Offensively- Starts with a balanced slightly open lower half with the hands held above and in front of the back shoulder while the barrel of the bat is shifted from a 45-degree to straight angle during the pre-pitch. Gets to the launch phase of the swing with a subtle shift of weight to the back side with a pronounced leg lift, with minimum stride distance, while the hands are loaded straight back staying inside the back shoulder while the barrel of the bat gets greater than 45-degrees with some wrap towards the pitcher. Drove the ball well to the opposite field gap with some lift; approach was from the middle to opposite field gap. Registered an impressive exit velocity of 89 MPH, which was a personal best (+9 MPH from last event). Defensively- Uses a chop step technique during the pre-pitch phase, however allows the lower half to get extremely wide. When fielding the ball, fielded with both hands out in front of the body, fielding from the center to left-side but did allow to the ball to get deep into the body causing a delay with the transfer. Moved off the base with good agility, but needs to work more glove side on 3-6-3 double play opportunities. Throws showed good accuracy across the diamond along with strength, registering an arm velocity of 76 MPH. Pitching- Works from the first base side of the rubber, feet angled to the throwing arm side, with both hands set and rested in the center of the body chest height. Gets to the gathered phase of the delivery with a short step towards the first base line while the hands remain center of the body chest height and lead knee is elevated above the waist with the foot pointing up. Sticks the landing with the lead to slightly opened, head centered with the back leg extended creating good drag and lead side firm to the body. The fastball, thrown from an over the top arm angle, topped out at 77 MPH, a new personal best and increase of 3 MPH from last event, showed some arm side run and sink. Located the pitch to the lower third of the zone as well as to both sides of the plate while creating a good down angle. The changeup, topping out at 73 MPH, showed good arm side fade as well as depth, however the differential from the fastball (-4 MPH), could improve. Displayed two curveball types, “get me over” and a put away curve that had more bite and depth. The get over curve showed 12-to-6 shape with loose rotation. The put away curve had much more bite and more of a 11-to-5 shape with tighter spin and action.
