2/10/19 - Sturdy 6-foot, 160, Writer has a durable body with some present strength. There is assuredly room for weight and strength gains. He plays first base and has capable actions but may profile as a corner outfielder due to pure arm strength. In the outfield, he had a good feel for footwork and displayed a strong and accurate throwing arm. He certainly has the ability to provide value at first base but ran well for his size and deserves a long look at corner outfield. In the box, he starts open and strides closed with a smooth, easy hand load. He whips the bat through the zone with good barrel release a she releases his top hand after contact. He maintains good posture, allowing him to get the barrel to a variety of pitch locations. Just a sophomore, Writer is an intriguing prospect that deserves attention.
On the mound, he has a short quick arm with an up-tempo delivery. The consistent arm speed and strength supplied a solid differential between his fastball, up to 81, and changeup, ranging 71-72. The curveball velocity was a little lite for he has a tendency to “choke” it a bit. He displays an aggressive intent and will need to improve his spray command, but there is most certainly something to work with. Don’t be surprised to see him mid to upper 80s in the not so distant future.
