Simon posted a 3.20 ERA in 17 appearances (all but one in relief) this spring for Notre Dame, contributing despite below-average control (22 walks along with 33 strikeouts in 25.1 IP). He’s been a key power arm out of the Harwich bullpen this summer, posting a 2.76 ERA and an 18-8 K-BB mar in 13 IP. A 6-foot-4, 225-pound righty, Simon has a lightning-fast arm and a slightly uptempo delivery that can get out of sync at times, hindering his command. But he can also be effectively wild with explosive riding life on a 93-96 mph fastball from a high three-quarters slot. His fastball spin rate is average (in the 2200 rpm range), but the pitch stays on plane and has excellent carry through the zone. He lacks a knockout secondary pitch but can land his fringy to average 79-82 mph slurve for strikes, though it lacked power and swing-and-miss bite in our look. Simon maintained his poise and wriggled his way out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve a Harwich victory at Hyannis, throwing his best breaking ball of his two-inning stint to get a strikeout and then inducing a game-ending double play. He has a clear bullpen profile and needs to refine his breaking ball and overall command, but his electric fastball and big frame make him a clear prospect of interest with day two draft potential.
Notre Dame recruit. Simon has a lean, athletic build at 6-foot-1 155-pounds. Fastball topped at 88 and sat consistently at 86-87 with late life. Flashed a sharp 11/5 curveball with downer break and tight spins for strikes and as a strikeout pitch. Long, clean arm action from a high-3/4 slot. Simon shows some rhythm to the start of his delivery into a tall, athletic balance point. Descends down the mound with level shoulders. Front land leg is firm and strong. Foot lands closed causing him to spin off to first base side of rubber. Easy, effortless and repeatable mechanics. High riser in the 2019 class with a high ceiling.
