3/20/19: Athletic frame with broad shoulders. Sets up to first base side of the rubber and starts his delivery with a small drop step. Comes to a good balance point with a high leg kick and takes a medium stride down the mound, landing square. Easy effort with a slight spin off to the first base side. Comes through a high-3/4 slot with a quick arm. Fastball ranged from 89-95 on the night, sitting mostly 92-94. Best secondary pitch is a slider that ranged from 81-85. At its best at 84-85 with late, sweeping break. Flashed a couple that were swing/miss offerings, but he mostly pulled the pitch to his glove side. Curveball was soft, loopy and below average at 72-74. Only threw one changeup at 82 with fade, but showed solid feel for it. Wasn't getting many swings and misses early, but started to pick them up as the game went on. Below average command. Pulled the slider and the fastball started to sail on him in the fifth inning. Took the loss, going seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight. (Rode)
10/19/18: Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Johnson is relatively new to the mound. A product of Louisburg Junior College, Johnson was a primary shortstop who received a chance to throw on the mound late in 2018. In five appearances, Johnston threw 6 innings, striking out 11 without issuing a walk. While the feel for the strike zone is impressive for a newcomer to the mound, the stuff plays as well. At the Campbell scout day, the fastball ranged 92-94 with a spin rate peaking at 2412. There is feel for a slow curveball at 70-76. The breaking ball comes out of the same slot as the fastball with a slight hump and 11/5 tilt. At the higher end of the velocity range spin flashed harder, downer action with a 2-plane tilt. From the Camels TrackMan the spin rate on the reaching 2725. Johnson threw his change-up at 86,again with feel for the strike zone and creating some deception with his hand speed. Lanky frame and athletic delivery with an average kick. Works on-line and lands square with a simple, repeatable delivery. Medium arm swing to a high-3/4 slot with a very stable head throughout. (Hall)
