2022 MLB Draft: After two lights-out starts in Weeks One and Two this spring, words of the first round were flying around the scouting industry. Although the first round may be a bit out of reach for the 6-foot-2 180-pound Mazur, he is likely to be chosen in the middle of Day One. He can run his fastball into the upper-90s and sit 94-96 into the middle innings. He complements his No. 1 with a slider that will show better than average, and even plus at times in the 84-86 mph range with a spin rate that maxes out in the mid-2600s. Mazur also boasts an above average, firm 87-88 mph changeup in his arsenal that is thrown with fastball arm speed. He's also able to mix in a better than average curveball. Aggressive and competitive with an athletic delivery the slender-framed right-hander pounds the zone (30 BB vs 98 SO in 93.2 IP) and profiles as a starter at the pro level.

Mazur currently sits at No. 61 in our preseason Top 250. After initially seeing the slender-bodied righthander for the first time last summer in the Cape Cod League – Report Here – and again last fall at Iowa – Report Here – it was time to see him one final time in advance of this summer's draft. After two lights-out starts against Air Force and Pepperdine in Weeks One and Two, words of the first round were flying around the scouting industry. I wanted to again see for myself the progress Mazur had made since my earlier views as both looks were not of that caliber.
On Saturday against the Red Raiders the 6-foot-3, 175-pound righthander wasn't as sharp as he looked last summer on the Cape (3-0, 1.55 ERA, 29 IP, 18 H, 6 BB, 34 SO) and without the traditionally solid Hawkeye defense behind him, Mazur took the ugly loss. The Hawkeye ace went four innings, allowed six hits, six runs (four earned), walked four and struck out five on 99 pitches. However, he was up to 97 mph on two occasions and sat mostly 95 mph in the first couple of innings with his fastball. Averaging 94 mph for the game, his fastball fluctuated in the 2050-2490 rpm range and averaged 2260. Normally known to create an average of around 20" of Induced Vertical Break, his IVB was down in this contest, averaging just over 17.5" of ride. Twenty inches of ride in NCAA baseball is 15th percentile, 17.5" is still above average, but much more common. He complements his No. 1 with a slider that will show better than average, and even plus at times. But, it did not show better than average on this look as just five of the 29 thrown were swung/missed. He did consistently throw it for strikes with the pitch sitting 83-86 mph with an average spin rate in the upper-2400s and maxing out in the mid-2600s. He also boasts an above average changeup in his arsenal, but just pulled the string a handful of times during this outing. Thrown with fastball arm speed, the cambio was firm at 87-88 mph with 1800 rpm of spin. Normally, Mazur will also mix in an above average curveball, but did not throw any on this look. Aggressive and competitive with an athletic delivery he profiles as a starter at the pro level. He is likely to receive strong consideration early in Day Two of this summer's draft.

Sequencing a four-pitch mix, Mazur kept the Shockers guessing for most of his start. After working around a first inning walk, he went on to retire the next 15 hitters in order. He sat 92-95 mph (2395-2497 spin) for the duration of his outing, touching 96 mph twice in the third inning. He shows hitters two different breaking balls: a two-plane mid-80s slider (2532-2609 spin), and a 81-83 mph curveball with 1-to-5 break, though they sometimes coalesce. He showed remarkable comfort throwing his changeup to lefthanders, an 82-86 mph offering with late fade. He missed bats with all four pitches, eliciting 18 empty swings in total. (Granger)
7/25/21
Cape Cod- Athletic and wiry bodied, Mazur sat 90-94 mph with his fastball, showing a good feel to pitch and command to both sides of the plate. Although he's thin at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, he has broad shoulders and will likely add some weight for durability. Added strength may also lessen his effort level. His two-seam fastball showed late action sink and spun in the 2100 rpm range, while his four-seamer approached the mid-2300s. Both pitches, but especially his sinker played up from their raw velocity. The second pitch in his arsenal was a low-80s slider. The pitch was slow to start, but spun tighter and broke harder as his start at Y-D progressed. The pitch flashed average at its best. Mazur also threw a changeup that lived 84-86. The pitch was firm with below average movement, however he sold it and consistently kept it down and on the corners. Aggressive and competitive, hitters were not comfortable in the box, taking many defensive swings. Mazur tunneled his pitches well and hammered away at the Red Sox lineup. He posted five shutout innings, struck out five and allowed just two hits. For the season he scattered 18 hits in 29 IP with 34 strikeouts, good for a 1.55 ERA.
