2021 MLB Draft: Super twitchy and athletic, Frelick is a dynamic, five-tool player in the college game. His future tool grades on the pro scale project to be a 55 arm, 60 run, 60 defend, 60 hit and 45 game power production. Despite his size at 5-foot-9, 175 pounds he projects to have near average pro power due to explosive twitch and bat speed combined with his intent to drive the ball at the plate. Using an outstanding core, likely developed as a prep hockey standout, Frelick stays connected and leverages the bat to the ball. Frelick best compares to the more explosive Shane Victorino than the smoothness of Andrew Benintendi. Both are good comparisons to the type of player that Frelick could become at the major league level. Topping it all off, he looks wired for the pro game with plus-plus makeup.
Super twitchy and athletic, Frelick is a dynamic, five-tool player in the college game. His future tool grades on the pro scale project to be a 55 arm, 60 run, 60 defend, 60 hit and 45 game power production, Currently batting second in the Eagles lineup he’s a threat to beat out a bunt as well as go up top. With four home runs and an .712 SLG% to date this season you likely won’t see him bunt too often, but it’s likely in his tool shed for greater use in pro ball. His current No. 22 college prospect ranking equates to late in the first round/supplemental, but that may be a bit light. He has the type of tools and performance that is deserving of the top 20 overall picks. However, it’s not very often that a sub 5-foot-10 college outfielder is selected that high. The good news is that the last player who fit that description was Andrew Benintendi in 2015 at 7th overall to Boston. However, Frelick best compares to the more explosive Shane Victorino than the smoothness of Benintendi. Both are good comparisons to the type of player that Frelick could become at the ML level. Topping it all off, he looks wired for the pro game with plus-plus makeup, a huge attraction to the big city lights of the East Coast.
A former all-state quarterback and hockey star in high school, Frelick is a quick-twitch athlete who plays the game at full throttle. He was an instant star as a freshman for BC in 2019, hitting .367/.447/.513 with 18 stolen bases before his season was cut short by knee surgery. He worked his way back to action by the spring, when he got off to a modest start before the season was canceled. A strong, compact 5-foot-9, 175-pound dynamo, Frelick is at least a plus runner whose instincts and aggressiveness make him a standout defender in center field. He’s a lefthanded slasher with a mature gap-to-gap approach and emerging home run pop, but his potential plus hit tool is his greatest asset. Frelick controls the strike zone very well, with a career BB-K mark of 33-22. He also has top-shelf makeup that makes his exciting tool set play up even further.
