Cali has an athletic build at 5-foot-8, 145 pounds. The right-handed hitting catcher shows an interesting skill-set. The swing is balanced, with a simple, direct bat path. He showed a tee exit velocity of 74 mph at the event. The stance is square to the pitcher, with good pre pitch motion. The hands are relaxed and get to a strong position during the load. Once the bat starts into the hitting zone, the hand speed is evident. He extends well through contact, staying on plane.
Behind the plate, he showed a quick transfer and athletic feet. The initial set up is square, with the glove set in the middle of the chest. The feet are light and quick as he transfers to throw. The hips and shoulders get square to the target, allowing the arm to stay in a good arm-swing. He also showed the ability to receive well during the event and showcased a strong arm, with a 75 mph reading on his throws.
On the mound, the arm-speed and athleticism were on display. The mechancis were simple. He uses a simple step back to get to the balance position. Once there, he’s able to gather before heading down the mound with good direction. The clean mechanics allow for the arm-swing to be consistant and quick. This produced a fastball that sat 76-79 mph, with late arm side run. The breaking ball was 66-68 mph and he looked to be fighting just being under the pitch. He also showed a change-up with good action at 70-71 mph.
Overall, I liked the skill-set. The arm talent is good and I think he should continue to gain velocity with additional maturity.
