A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Cormier is a 6-foot, 165 pound right-handed hitting infield/catching prospect. He hits out of an event, athletic set up, with the hands set just off the back shoulder. He’s able to load onto the backside and get the hands into the launch position before taking a direct hitting path through contact. His batting practice consisted of a lot of solid contact and a max exit velocity of 78 MPH.
In the infield, Cormier was 79 MPH on his throws. The feet move well, allowing him to get into a fundamental fielding position. The glove is relaxed out in front, with the hands showing well transitioning through the ground ball. He’s able to get the hips and shoulders in line with the target and uses a short, quick arm swing to get the ball across the infield.
Behind the plate, Cormier was 72 MPH on his throws. The initial set up is square, balanced and relaxed. The glove is centered in the chest, with the head up. As he transitions to throw, the feet, hips and shoulders create a good line with second base. The ball exchange is clean, allowing him to get into a strong throwing position. He finishes over the front leg and works toward his target.
On the mound, Cormier works primarily out of the stretch. He gets to a good balance position over the rubber and is able to have consistent direction toward home plate. The fastball sits 72-73 MPH out of an over-the-top arm angle. He also falls a bit to the first base side, giving the pitch some downward, sinking tilt. The breaking ball is 65-66 MPH with good spin and changes the planes well. He also mixed in a change-up at 62-63 MPH with the same action as the fastball, with good arm-speed.

The 5-foot-10, 165 pound switch hitting catcher had a tee exit velocity of 66mph from the left side and 75 mph from the right. On the right side, the stance is balance and the stroke is quick and direct to the ball. From the left side, the stance is wider and he gets more elevation with the swing. Both swings have a chance to be good as he develops. He also ran an 8.5 sec 60.Behind the plate, the arm was 62 mph down to second and registered a 2.4-2.5 pop time. The transfer from glove to hand is good but the feet drift a little, causing him to fall toward 3B.On the mound, he worked primarily out of the stretch. The fastball was 64-66mph out of a ¾ slot that produced some arm side run. Showed good feel for a breaking pitch that ranged 54-59mph. Also, threw a change-up that is still coming along at 62-64mph.
