June 2017
Ciufo had some nice at-bats against the hard throwing Kelly, and showed athleticism in his 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame. He moved well in the infield at his shortstop position, and showed the ability to make throws from all angles and while on the run. Ciufo's soft hands will give him a chance to play some infield position at the next level, and his accurate, loose arm will give him a chance to be a strong defender.
Long Island Top Prospect (January 16, 2017)
Ciufo, an impressive 2018 right-handed hitting middle infielder, stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 170 pounds, ran a 4.33 from home to first. Offensively- Hits from a slightly open balanced lower half with the hands above the back shoulder and barrel of the bat vertically moving between parallel and 45 degrees during the pre-pitch. Gets to the launch phase of the swing by elevating the lead foot, driving it forward landing on the ball of the foot, not completely squaring the lower half, while the hands are loaded straight back, well outside the back shoulder and barrel of the bat greater than 45 degrees with a slight wrap towards the pitcher. Clean connected swing, keeping the hands compact and short to the ball with quality extension. Displayed the ability to drive the ball very well from the pull side gap to opposite field gap, creating quality backspin with very good extension thru the ball. Recorded an exit velocity of 87 MPH on the day. Defensively- Active feet; small choppy breakdown steps while attacking ball out front. Quick transfer with slight delay as he shuffles into his throw. Low ¾ slot with velocity peaking at 75 MPH across the diamond. Middle infield actions and projection.
