Up to 98 mph in a flawless first inning against Ole Miss, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander showed a super quick arm and good angle from a high three-quarter release point combined with a cross body landing. His heater jumped from his hand early in his start mostly at 96-97, then settled in at 92-95 for the remainder of his three inning, 68 pitch outing. Ray also flashed an average slider at 82-84 mph that he repeated with solid tilt and an above average 80-81 mph changeup that induced a handful of swing/misses. After injuries (Tommy John surgery as a HS senior, strained oblique as a college sophomore) limited him to just 8 IP over his first two years of college, Ray posted four starts and a 2.53 ERA in 21.1 IP for the Horned Frogs in 2020. Now in his fourth year of college, Ray has five career starts and less than 35 total IP under his belt. Scouts’ eyes will not only be on his stuff and performance, but also focused on his durability over the course of a full college season.

2020 DRAFT:A transfer from John A Logan JC (IL), Ray has an imposing presence on the mound and a big-time arm, but still needs to prove he can stay healthy. Injuries have plagued his career, including Tommy John surgery in June 2017 previous to his freshman year at Illinois State and an oblique strain last spring in junior college when he missed the final half of the 2019 season. But, the stuff is undeniable. He will sit anywhere from 93-97 mph with his fastball, along with a breaking ball at 79-80 and low-80s changeup that he throws with fastball arm speed. Ray finished the 2020 season 1-1, 2.53 ERA, 21.1 IP, 13 H, 8 BB, 21 SO, .181 OPPAVG.
10/5/2018: Transfer from Illinois State University where he red-shirted after undergoing TJ surgery in June ‘17. Athletic RHP was 92-94 mph on scout day, have seen 95 earlier this fall. Showed two different breaking balls in a slider and curveball along with a change-up with plenty of dip late in the zone.
9/15/2018:Quick armed righty. Long stride, lands on-line. FB 91-95. Breaking ball 76-81 mph with short, slider-like break. CH thrown with FB armspeed at 80 mph. Was best secondary offering on this look, but can see these two pitches varying by the day. Has feel for both, just needs consistency. More thrower than pitcher at this point, but definite pro prospect. (Seifert)
