Cape Cod: Kent emerged as a solid swing option as a redshirt freshman for Arizona last season, putting up a 5.71 ERA in 41 innings, but he appeared to take a step forward this summer and announce his intention to compete for a full-time rotation spot in Tucson in 2024. He finished the summer with a 2.52 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 25 innings across six starts. He certainly has a starter’s repertoire, as he throws five pitches—a fastball in the high 80s and low 90s, a low-to-mid-70s curveball, a changeup from 79-81 mph, and a cutter and slider in a similar velocity range and of similar shape, though he’ll take a few mph off the slider. His walk rate was elevated this summer at 5.4 walks per nine innings compared to 2.9 in the spring for the Wildcats. On the flip side of that, a strikeouts rate of 7.2 per nine innings last season at Arizona was elevated to 9.7 with Y-D. If Kent can find the happy medium where he keeps his walk rate down while also missing more bats than he did in 2023, he’ll be a major contributor for Arizona in 2024 and will raise his profile in scouting circles.
