7/10/20:After an initial look last fall during a JC scout day/showcase, Gockel has elevated his game since that time. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound limited projection right-hander repeats a polished delivery from a high three-quarter slot. He’s a strike-thrower who locates his stuff, staying away from the middle of the plate. Gockel sat 90-91 in the fourth inning with his fastball (2100-2300 rpm) after sitting 88-90 in the first three. His top skill is the feel for his breaking pitch which he manipulates at will, ranging from a low-80s slider to a true curveball shape at 72-74 mph. He repeats and commands the pitch, effectively expanding glove side when the situation calls for it. Although the raw grade is more fringey than above average, the breaker mix plays up, allowing Gockel to easily navigate through a lineup. At present, he’s more of a good college pitcher than pro prospect, but Gockel’s strong performance this summer has opened some eyes with nine strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in 4 IP.

Pitching: Repeatable, quiet delivery. Quick arm, 3/4 slot. Heel first, square landing. Finishes toward 1B side. Showed command of all three pitches and advanced attack plan. Good mound presence and competitive fire. FB: 87-92 early, settled in 86-90. Around the zone, good life/carry through the zone. CB: 72-75 mini 12/6 action. Good depth, utilized early in count to get hitters out in front. Located it consistently down in the zone. SL: 74-78 11/5 action. Put away pitch, tunneled well off both other offerings. Manipulated the shape and speed difference.
