3/23/19: Steady and sure-handed defensive player who is not flashy, but makes all of the routine plays. Showed good body control, an above average arm and the ability to throw from all angles. Overall, Shepherd showed good footwork and strong fundamentals in all parts of his defensive game. Offensively, he has a smooth, easy stride and load with not a lot of movement, which allows him to stay balanced and easily repeat his mechanics. He connects his back elbow and hip very well, gets the barrel flat and on plane and has great extension through the ball. Stays behind the baseball very well and allows his hands to extend away from his body at contact. Overall, he has a good feel to hit with strong plate discipline, good hand/eye and adjusts well to the pitch type. He may also be the best .264 hitter in college baseball right now. His current, on the low side, .297 babip should increase as the season progresses, yet it is surprisingly close to his career mark of .307 which could be cause for some concern. After only a three game look, I'm not sure if he's just unlucky and hits a lot of at'em balls or I saw an outlier series with more hard contact (8-for-13 on hard contact, but resulted in just four hits during the series) than is normal for him. Regardless, Shepherd was impressive on the dirt and in the batter's box, while also running a 4.34 from home to first. He's also a throwback type of ballplayer who looks to have great makeup. There will be many higher-tooled prospects drafted ahead of Shepherd, but in the end, Shepherd will likely outplay and go further up the farm system than most of them. (Seifert)
