Cape Cod- Inconsistent command limited McFarlane to 34 innings as a 2YR FR this spring, but he showed flashes of brilliance this summer, reminding scouts why he was such a high-profile recruit for Miami two years ago. A lean, high-waisted 6-foot-4, 205-pounder with a loose, whippy three-quarters arm action, McFarlane has plenty of room to add strength to his frame, but he already flashes 94-96 mph velocity, though he worked at 91-93 in our viewing this summer. The fastball plays up thanks to plus spin rates in the 2500s and running life to his glove side, but he scattered it in this look. We also saw the makings of an above-average slider at 80-84 mph with a high spin rate into the 2700s, and Holliday said he also throws a curveball, though the two pitches can blend together, and his feel for the breaking stuff was inconsistent in our look. McFarlane needs to refine his secondary stuff and his command, but his projectable frame, loose arm action and sometimes-explosive fastball gives him an exciting ceiling.

Miami Commit has a projectable frame with long, skinny limbs at about 6-foot-1, 170 pounds. While raw on the mound, he is athletic with considerable upside. His arm is quick through a low-3/4 slot and he stays upright in his delivery with only slight effort. His fastball jumps out of his hand with finish through the zone and was 91-94 mph early, touching 95. He threw two breaking balls in the game with the slider being the better pitch. It has sharp 10/4 break at 77-80 with plus potential. He also tried to throw a curveball that showed more 11/5 break at 73-75, but his arm slot makes it tough to consistently stay on top of the pitch. It flashed depth, but was mostly loose and slurvy. He also showed feel for a changeup at times, sitting in the low 80s, but he didn’t repeat the arm action on the pitch consistently.

8/2018 - Live arm, 91-92 FB. Sweepy SL at 77-79 as he works around the ball.
