2021 MLB Draft: Thompson ranked as one of the top junior college prospects in 2020, but made his way to Chapel Hill where he was far and away the Tar Heels’ best player. He has an athletic, rangy frame at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds and covers ground well from gap to gap with good reads, efficient rounds and long strides. He has shown some swing and miss, striking out 67 times in 54 games, but there is serious buggy whip in his swing that produces some power.
Long and athletic at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Thompson quickly passes the eye test. He patrols the outfield with ease while showing a near average arm from the big field. At the plate he has plus power potential and shows good bat-to-ball skills, but lacks elite bat speed. Thompson led off the bottom of the 9th in a scoreless duel against San Jacinto with a line drive single the opposite way. He would later come around to score the winning run on a walk-off sac fly. He is committed to North Carolina for next season.
9/27/19: One of the better athletes of the weekend Thompson shows an impressive amount of body control in his hands while at the plate. With an upright stance, Thompson gains a little ground towards the pitcher while keeping his head still and front side closed. He fires his hands from the backside with plus bat speed and really drives the ball as he showcased with multiple gappers, one that turned into a homer. In the outfield Thompson’s long legs allow him to glide to spots right under the ball as he shows natural ball skills that can’t be coached.
The long lanky outfielder pitched on the day, and did a solid job for King in a winning effort. He most likely isn’t a pitcher at a collegiate level, but more an athletic, projection outfielder. Offensively, he was 2-4 with an RBI on the day Neither hit was barreled, but you can see tools and potential. There is some length in the swing, but there is present athleticism and a lot of potential projection.
An extremely long-limbed, athletic and projectable outfielder ran a 6.7 60 with long strides. He showed some length in the swing, but has some feel for the barrel and bat speed. The athleticism is extremely intriguing with a lot of room to fill out.
