11.1.17
6-foot-2, 215 pounds, big, thick, and durable build. Average athleticism, strength is there but would do well to improve conditioning. A left-handed pitcher with the frame to log innings as a starter, Gay works from a ¾ to high ¾ slot. Gay has a bit of a short stride for someone with his length. His hands start high before dropping to the belt. Gay has a noticeable coil and does a solid job hiding the ball at the backside, though at times it does pop out. The delivery is repeatable. When Gay missed his spots, it often came as a result of his failing to rip his hips through from the coil, causing his arm to lag behind the rest of the delivery. His three pitch mix consists of a fastball, curveball, and changeup. The fastball generates ample arm side run, as is often associated with lefties, coming in between 80-81 mph. With more work to the frame this number could bump up as soon as this spring. The curveball, which is thrown between 65-67 mph, is still developing, as is his 72-74 mph changeup. The curveball needs more consistency, though at its best shows the proper spin with some two-plane movement. The pitch will need to tighten up in order to induce swings-and-misses against college level competition. His changeup flashed above average movement which should help him against right-handed hitters. Finding command will be important. Gay has the physicality to compete at the next level, but needs to refine his offerings this winter, furthering his command of all three pitches. If he improves the frame and gains more consistency, Gay could be a diamond in the rough as a late 2018 commitment.

At 6-foot-2, 215-pounds, his frame is big and strong. He hits from the left side and shows a balanced stance, the path is good to the ball and has a good finish. Shows plus power to the pull side, needs to be able to use the rest of the field. His tee exit velocity was 81, showed a solid BP. At first base, he showed soft hands and good footwork, arm strength was 71 across the diamond. Off the mound, fastball was 73-75, threw strikes with the fastball. Arm path is short, opens it a little early on the back, gets some sink to the arm side. Curveball was 61-63, flips it in there, needs to be thrown harder. Change up was 68-69 and had plus feel for this pitch. Foot speed and conditioning are a must, has some feel for the game and the bat has a chance.
