2/28/19 - Espalin is an athletic player showing a good arm and range at 2B with that athleticism also showing up out of the box. His swing has some length with him swinging through some CHG’s in the 1st game, but he started the offense for the Lancers against Valley Christian with a double down the RF line and scoring the first run of the game. He’s got some positional versatility as well being able to show off his arm around the infield and could probably play in the OF as well.
9/20/18 - Espalin, a USC commit, is feeling it right now. We noticed it at our Underclass Games last month and it's carried over so far into scout ball. Espalin (#20 in 2020 class) just looks very comfortable at the plate and is allowing his tools to take over. Felt almost as though he was pressing in the spring and early summer, but no more. Smoked an 86 mph fastball into left-center field for a two RBI double before showing off his base running skills and scoring a few pitches later.
9/9/10 - Continues to show the comfort at the plate that made him a PAC 12 commit his freshman season. While he may not have a ton of hits to show for it, there’s a noticeable difference to his demeanor in the batters box now compared to last spring. Had a nine-pitch at-bat showing his patience and ability to spoil pitches. Defense continues to be steady.
8/1/18 - SoCal Underclass Games - USC commit. Six-foot, 165-pounds, medium/large frame with proportional strength throughout the body. Strong through the upper body. The shortstop shows soft hands with smooth, fluid footwork. Range to both sides. Stays low to the ground bending at the hips. Backhand is simple. Exchanges are smooth/clean. Picked several bad throws in game. At the plate Espalin has shown significant improvement from the spring season. Appears far more confident allowing his always-present tools to show. Espalin shows plus bat speed with easy pop. Drives balls to all fields from a balanced setup with a smooth load and a short stride. Gets and keeps barrel on consistent plane through hitting zone. Power projects with continued physical maturation and added strength.
4/3/18 - 4/6/18 - The frame is broad-shouldered, lean and athletic with plenty of room to fill out. Natural athlete who played second base on the day, but can likely move over to SS with ease. Left-handed swinger with strong wrists and quick hands with lag in the zone.
