4/5/19: The senior righty was highly impressive in his most recent outing against Holy Cross, racking-up nine strikeouts in six innings of work en route to his sixth win on the season. Holy Cross sat on his mid-90s heat early in the outing, collecting a couple of hits in the first inning, but was left mostly helpless once Song began to effectively mix in all four of his offerings the second and third time through the order. The arsenal is deep and impactful, starting with a mid-90s fastball that comes with some giddy-up while sitting in the 94-to-96 mph velocity band. The righty touched 97 multiple times in this outing and even popped a stray 99 up and out of the zone. All three of his secondary offerings showed at least above-average potential. His slider is a tilted breaker that tunnels well off the fastball and shows good bite and average depth when he hits his release. He's most precise in the 83-to-85 mph range but also showed an ability to throw an upper-80s, short-slide variation that played like a cutter but finished mostly out of the zone to the glove side. Song's changeup worked in the low-80s with very good arm speed deception and at its best displayed plus fade while his least-used weapon – a mid-70s 12-to-6 curve with good depth and bite – served mostly as a change of pace offering. He threw a handful of curves and, in each case, hitters were locked up to the point they could not offer a swing. Right now Song is heavily skewed to control over command, and the control was a bit inconsistent in this start, as well. There's some drift and some stride inconsistency that can throw off timing and release, but it doesn't appear to be anything that would lead to long-term struggles. In fact, a quality dev staff could likely help Song to execute his offerings more consistently, with room to bump his slider and change-up a half-grade or more. He works confidently and aggressively, as you'd expect from a Midshipman, and shows a high level of comfort mixing his pitches and attacking different quadrants. Song's military commitment is the elephant in the room. Without it, he's a first-round arm that looks like a potential mid-rotation starter. With uncertainty as to when he might be able to play at the next level in earnest, he likely drops but I wouldn't think too far. He'd be an excellent fit for a club like Arizona who is flush with bonus cash and picks and can afford to take on some risk for this upside. (Faleris)

2/22/19: Athletic, projectable frame with broad shoulders at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds. High leg kick with slight scapular load. Lands slightly closed, throwing just across body. Half circle arm action in the back with a small hitch before coming through high-3/4 slot. Takes a long stride and finishes upright, with very slight spin off to first base. Fastball sat mostly 91-94, touching 95-96, and racked up swings and misses with finishing action. Command of the pitch is fair, as he tended to pull off and miss arm side. Can elevate the fastball and go inside. Best secondary pitch was a wipeout slider with hard, late break. It ranged from 82-86. At its best at 85-86. Future plus pitch. Curveball showed sharpness in bullpen, but was loopier in game. 11/5-12/6 action with depth at 75. Potential average offering. Showed feel for changeup in pen, but didn't see any in game. Good competitor. First 10 outs were strikeouts. Stranded bases loaded with a strikeout on 95 in the fifth. Went right after hitters. 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 14 K, 99 pitches. (Rode)
