MLB Draft Combine: Sinker baller with polished delivery. Upright finish with good direction and still head. Simple, easy well-balanced delivery. Repeats. Heavy arm side run 89-91. SL 82. CH 84-86. CB 79. Raw stuff doesn't overwhelm, but strike thrower with high pitchability. Projects as back-end starter.
Cape Cod- Ramirez has been a fixture in the Long Beach State rotation since he showed up on campus, goin 2-0, 2.73 with a 27-8 K-BB mark in 26.1 innings in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, then following it up with a solid 4-4, 4.27 line in 2021. Over six starts for Y-D this summer, Ramirez boasts a 3.10 ERA and an impressive 33-13 K-BB mark in 29 innings. With a low-energy, super calm presence, Ramirez never seems fazed on the mound. Solidly built at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, he has a quick arm and a clean, low-effort delivery with a still head. Ramirez works downhill from a three-quarters slot, and while he scattered his 89-93 mph sinking fastball on our look, he is better than we saw. His heater has explosive action at times to his arm side. He also flashed an inconsistent curveball at 78 mph and a firmer slider, and both pitches are functional — it simply depends upon the day which one is working better. His best secondary pitch is a solid-average 81-83 changeup with spin rates in the 2100 rpm range, and he has the feel to throw any pitch in any count when he's on his game. He lacked his best control and worked slow on our look, but his overall Cape numbers suggest his command is solid.
Long Beach State commit. 6-foot-2 205-pounds. Ramirez posted 108 pitches with a complete game 2-hit shutout, recorded nine strikeouts, six looking, and four walks. Featured a four-pitch mix; his fastball sat 85-90, topping out at 91 after the third inning. In the fourth, his velocity ticked up and was a consistent 88-90 the rest of the way. Curveball had good shape at 69-74, used the slider at 75-79 for an effective out pitch, and sprinkled a few change-ups at 77-82 for outs as well. Ramirez produced the game-winning RBI double. Finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate.
