5/1/18 – Santa Clara commit. Tristan exhibited the substance that might get him drafted in June, but did not get the result he was looking for. In 5.1 innings pitched he gave up 3 hits, 5 runs, and 5 walks, striking out 4. FB was 88-90, and CB was 73-75. He went 0 for 3 at the plate with a walk.

4/24/18 - Julian Tristan, a Santa Clara commit, took to the mound against Corona del Mar which features five Division I signees/commits in their lineup last week and was impressive from the outset. Tristan, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound, long, lean, wiry strong, two-way player, gave a glimpse of his future potential on the mound. He featured a four-pitch mix from a long, loose, whippy arm and a fast wind up/delivery. Coming from a low ¾ slot, Julian generates lots of downhill plane on his fastball that worked 88-89 mph and touched 90 mph several times throughout his outing. The pitch shows some life as it enters the zone and Julian shows the ability to pound hitters in on either side of the plate with it. Tristan threw only a handful of curveballs later in his outing but it was a tight, late breaking pitch that shows good depth and some sweeping action. The pitch worked 75-78 mph giving scouts that insight into his arm strength and potential for added velocity on all pitches in the future. Tristan relied heavily on his changeup which, on this day, was an above average pitch. Working 79-82 mph the pitch just falls off the table to righties while showing late fading and tilting action. He threw 14 of them and not a single one started above a hitters knees before diving away in the zone. The slider shows plus pitch potential. Tristan also mixed in some changeups at 78-79 mph that show potential as well, but he did not throw those with the conviction of other pitches. Tristan maintained his velocity, and even got stronger, as his outing progressed touching 90 several times in the sixth inning. Tristan was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Using a long stride, he gains lots of ground quickly - he was clocked at 8.21 on one double and 4.39 on a groundout.

10/27/19 - FALL vs Fresno State: The live-armed righty started the day off on point, pounding the zone with his loose mid-arm, drawing weak contact while striking out the middle of the order in a strong fall 2 IP outing. Tristan has a large and lanky frame and uses it well with a quick, momentum building delivery. The long, loose arm gets out back behind him, but has the quickness to get out front unimpeded, spotting the FB to both sides of the plate. FB 91-94, T95 staying mainly 93-94 with life staying off the middle of the plate; swing and miss pitch up through the top of the zone. Working from the stretch, did see the velocity fall to 89-90. CHG 79-81 two-seam actions with small bottom used against both RHH/LHH. SLD 79-82 short, rolling over late toward the plate; had a couple just spin but was able to fool hitters with its action picking up two of the Ks. The frame still has space to take on strength and the life on the fastball is impressive showing he should be a name to follow come spring. (Ozella)
