4/25/18 - Tall, lean, ultra-competitive ace for the No. 1 team in Division II. Deliberate worker that does not give in to hitters and challenges them on every pitch. Sound, clean, repeatable delivery throughout the game. Became a little erratic in the sixth inning as his pitch count climbed, but came out in the seventh and was right back to dominating. Consistent strike thrower with four pitches that induces more ground outs than fly outs. The arm works with ease and low stress. Projects to gain velocity as his body fills out and adds strength. Touched 95 mph with the fastball in the first, third, and fifth, innings, sat 92-94 mph for the game. His 122nd pitch of the game was a 94 mph fastball on the black for a strikeout in the seventh inning. The pitch has some angle to it while lacking life through the zone. Above average control as he spotted it on the black consistently. Usually followed a breaking ball with an elevated fastball which caused swing-and-miss nearly every time he threw it. Slider was a plus pitch on this night as it was virtually unhittable and was commanded very well. Working 80-83 mph, the pitch was sharp and tight with late tilt. Carranza showed two variations of the pitch, one was a loopy slurve while the other was tight and hard with lots of life. His 118th pitch was an 83 mph slider for a strikeout looking. The changeup shows traits of a quality pitch working 79-83 mph with sink and late fade. Working from the same arm slot with it, Carranza had hitters off balance all night. It’s apparent he trusts this pitch as he used it an any count and threw it with conviction. Touched 83 mph on pitch 117 in the 7th inning. The curveball shows characteristics of being a power curve with 12-6 break while at times dipping into the 11-5 shape. The pitch caused a lot of chase out of the zone and was effective in any count. Very athletic pitcher who fields his position well. Works quick to the plate from the stretch (1.25-1.35) holding runners well and varying his looks. Generates swing and miss with all offspeed pitches. Struck out 11 (five looking) on all pitches. Went seven innings while throwing 121 pitches. Profiles as a middle rotation starter. Potential Day 1 draft pick.
