2020 DRAFT: Previous to the 2020 spring, Powell was already one of the nation's best closers. And, his stuff took a jump as a junior. He can pound 96 mph heat while also attacking with his difference-maker, a plus power slider at 84-85. He can also freeze batters on wicked hammer curveballs at 81-82. College relievers aren't typically taken too early in the draft, especially those standing 6-foot, 190 pounds, but Powell's success has always been a constant (0.00 ERA, 9.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 20 SO in 2020) and he has the potential to move quickly through a minor league system in that same role. Now that his stuff has taken a jump, so has his draft value.
6/30/19: Six-foot, 180 pound three-quarter slot righty reliever who is coming off an outstanding spring as UCLA’s closer; 4-3 record with 17 saves and a 1.84 ERA in 49 IP. Allowed only 19 hits with 65 strikeouts. Surprising that he has any gas left in his tank after making appearances in 40 of UCLA’s 63 games. His main weapon is an 81-83 mph out pitch slider that he throws often. Larger shape with late bite. Very good feel for the pitch, can sweep to expand when needed. Fastball sat 92-93 mph with late arm side life. Overall, a very similar look to what we saw during Week Two of the spring season when UCLA visited Georgia Tech. Allowed two runs on one hit with one walk in one inning pitched during his CNT trial debut. Profiles as a reliever at the next level and likely Day Two selection next June. (Seifert)
