Body: 6-5, 210-pounds. Big frame with long limbs, starting to fill in some, room to grow. Hit: RHH. Even and athletic stance, simple step to load, elbows tucked, two-hand finish. Used the whole field in BP session displaying his pole-to-pole ability. Blast Motion scores of 41-56-41. Average across the board with the best Blast score coming from connection where swing alignment highlights the swing. Lower half rotation increase is available immediately and could create better launch angle and in turn home run production. Power: 95.00 max exit velocity Arm: RH. INF - 81.00 mph. Infield arm velocity increased 5 mph since the last showing, continued low infield arm angle, short arm swing and release. Able to make any throw from first base with life across the diamond. Defense: Looked the part and played with confidence at first base, showed necessary skills to play first at the next level, picked well in game. Run: 7.63 runner in the 60.

Body: 6-3, 185-pounds. Long and lean frame with some present strength and room to fill out Hit: RHH. Straight up feet with a narrow even base in stance. Uses a simple forward stride. Compact stroke that works on a flatter path that produced many LDs. Good feel for the barrel. Used the whole field in BP. Power: 90 mph exit velocity. Present doubles power. Bat speed gains are needed to further increase power (Average 67mph) Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. OF - 80 mph. In the OF showed longer arm swing but whippy arm action. Kept his throws down for accurate long hops. In the INF arm action was similar but showed the ability to lower the arm slot when needed especially when on the move. Flashed good life across the diamond and 5/6 throws were on target. Defense: In the OF showed an average approach to the ball. Gains good momentum coming through. Exchanges were clean. In the INF, took good first steps and was quick to getting to his spots. Solid range to both sides. Soft hands and quick exchanges. Run: 7.75 runner in the 60.

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Smaldino in this setting. Stands on a long, lean, wiry frame that has ample room for growth all around. Sets up in a crouched, balanced stance and uses a high leg kick load. Bat path and barrel are quick through the zone with a high finish. He consistently found the barrel in his BP round peppering balls to all fields. Adding strength and muscle mass will allow him to get to the inside pitch and drive the ball with authority. Displayed good actions during his ground ball session at third base and showed he is capable of making the routine play. Throws were accurate and online. As he matures and adds strength his overall game and tools will improve.
