3/3/19 - Uncommitted. Cabanilla flashed potential and projection in his long and lanky frame. Less than two months ago his fastball topped out at 89 mph and during this start, his fastball topped out at 91 mph while sitting in 87-89 mph range. The loose and easy arm action shows exactly why he is capable of velocity jumps and will continue to see them. Arm action continues to show deception and whippy like movement. Gains good extension and explodes towards home plate but lacks a proper backside follow through. Struggled with command of the fastball at times but seemed more likely from his frustration with the four errors made behind him in the first three innings. Showed a breaking ball in the 71-74 mph range with tilt and some depth but needs to continue to develop the pitch with the same arm speed and conviction.
1/19/19- 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, lanky pitchers build with room for growth. Creates deception with a funky delivery, hiding the ball well. Shows plus confidence and presence on the mound. Releases from an over the top arm angle with long and loose arm action. Decent balance with some full body effort and drop and drive lower half approach towards home plate. Fastball worked in the 85-87 mph range and topped at 88 mph with some arm-side run. Changed arm slot on the breaking ball and had trouble locating consistency, breaking at an 11/5 tilt in the 68-70 mph range. Flashed a change-up in the 76-78 mph range with sink and fade. Fine tuning of off-speed pitches and continued growth and development coupled with a funky-deceptive delivery could attract Division 1 coaches.
1/19/19 - Desmond Cabanilla came in shoved in his first two innings before his command became sporadic in the third. Working 88-89 with his fastball, the long, lean Cabanilla commanded the pitch to all quadrants of the strike zone with a loose, easy arm that was clean and repeatable. Showed feel for his curveball at 68-70 using as an out pitch twice to register a strikeout. When contacted, the curveball induced weak groundouts to the pullside from righties. Cabanilla pitched with some attitude on the mound showing some displeasure when his timing/rhythm were disrupted by the hitting asking for and being granted time out. A clear sign that his tempo was affecting hitters. Lots to like with this junior righty who at 6-foot-2, 180 has a lot of physical projection.
