2021 MLB Draft: After a Freshman All-America season at Arizona where he batted .323 with 10 home runs and a .596 SLG%, Dooney batted just .146 during the covid cancelled 2020 season. He then took his talents to Coolidge and posted a .376/.452/.706 slash, helping lead the Vaqs to a second place finish in this year's NJCAA D1 World Series. A Tennessee recruit, the left handed hitter shows some gap power and very good bat to ball skills. He's an offense first prospect, but is more than capable at the keystone.
Dooney has bounced around the infield this summer with the Moondogs, just as he did with Arizona during his freshman year. Although the struggles have been consistent all summer in terms of offensive production, Dooney flashes spots of what he was able to create at Arizona during his freshman year with some loud outs and adjustability from both sides of the dish. In his first collegiate season, the switch hitter racked up a .323 average, 14 doubles, and 10 HRs in his 161 ABs with a staggering OPS at 1.013. Standing at a strong 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, his ability to hit from both sides of the plate make him an intriguing prospect in two years. There’s room left to fill out throughout his body. Dooney was selected to virtually every Freshman All- American honor that he could be in the spring. He projects as a 1B, but the bat plays, even if his summer numbers don’t directly reflect that.
