V Wilcox - Tennessee Commit. Athletic, mature and strong medium frame with above-average flexibility. Showed very strong catching skills using his athleticism and flexibility to stay under the baseball and to hop out of his crouch. Agile with great side-to-side movements beating balls to their spots and smothering pitches into the ground. Very quiet receiver with strong receiving hand showing ability to turn glove and get his pitcher strikes. Solid average arm with easy actions. Between innings put ball on bag with limited effort in throws (2.3 consistent pop with 2.25 from knee) before really showing the arm off in the game; back picked to 2nd with snap throw. On double steal threw behind lead runner just missing runner at 2nd showing great footwork and arm strength needed behind the plate (2.02 Pop). Offensively bat flashed solid bat-to-ball skills with oppo approach. Narrow, opened stance with even hands away from the body. Loose wrists with some bat whip through the zone working on quick arc through the zone. Hits behind the baseball with a stiff front side allowing arm to rotate through contact. Showed athleticism out of the box with good footspeed underway (4.57 H-1st).
8/1/18 - Lawrence is an athletic 6-foot, 175-pound muscular and well defined lower half, switch hitting catcher that was one of the best overall athletes on the field. The Tennessee commit started the day with 6.87 60 yard dash and followed that up with stellar work behind the plate. Lawrence shows a quiet glove and sticks pitches very well. Goes down to get the low pitch without much movement in his upper body or giving pitches away. The switch hitting Lawrence gets his hands to work through the zone and keeps his barrel on a consistent path while getting good extension through the ball. Appears more comfortable from the left side where his power really projects. Had an exit velocity of 88 off the tee.
7/13/18 - Tennessee commit. Compact athletic body type, built well, looks same as he did in the spring. Calling card remains his ability on the defensive side, with plus receiving skills, athletic blocking talent, quick and strong arm. Pop times were 1.93-1.95, ball comes out easy and strong with good accuracy, making his catch/throw talents not only impressive but also usable in game situations. He actually takes his time to get his throws off and they still come out quick. Legit catch/throw talent ranks with any in Northern California. Switch-hitter, bit long on the left side with barrel in and out of the zone too early, on right side hit opposite field line drives and looked to be too focused on pulling with some pop which shouldn't be his game. Has good hands and plenty of bat speed but a more refined and disciplined approach would serve him well, given his modest size and physicality.
4/9/18 - Tennessee commit. Athletic bodied 6-foot-0 175-pound catcher built like a middle infielder, not sure the 6-foot-0 is accurate but he's got a good build. Does so many things right as a catcher. Calm, quiet body actions, small movements, great anticipation, glove hand is sound and sure. Can pick it, can block it, can catch it and stick it. Good on both glove side and arm side. Arm is strong, up to 82 mph on a warm-up toss and looks to have more in the tank. Hustled down line on a 5-3 put-out, just another trait that is often lost but he does it. Offensively he's best when staying gap to gap and letting the ball travel. Somewhat of an inside-out swing and can work to stay behind the ball better with his hips and let his hands live a bit more. The swings I saw were from the left-side only.
