5/2/18 - Another Golden Bear who is having a breakout season. Athletic righty with a low effort delivery and excellent arm action. Throws from a high three-quarters slot. Lands on-line with a still head. I may not have seen his best performance (5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO), but his athleticism and talent were obvious. Fastball ranged from 88-92 on my gun, although reports of some 93s floated around the ballpark. Decent downplane with fair wiggle. Wasn’t afraid to pitch inside and froze several hitters when he did. Early in the game he showed a late action breaking ball with slurve shape. Ranged from 75-81 mph. Third pitch was a 79-81 mph changeup which induced a couple swing/misses. Although he didn’t show plus stuff or pitchability on this look, he did show athleticism, a starter’s delivery/arm action, solid control, a feel for three pitches and some projection making him a great candidate to be selected in the middle to later rounds of Day 2…just depends on how well a team’s scouts have seen him on any particular day.
