Maier

Took the ball for the Ducks to open the 2022 season against San Diego. It was a bumpy start, as the right-hander allowed four runs (two earned) in the first two innings, which ultimately saddled him with the loss. He finished with three hits and two hit batters while striking out nine over five innings. His fastball was 92-93 mph in the first before settling in at 90-92 with some heavy arm-side run. The changeup has similar action at 86-87. He relied heavily on his slider, which was above average with late 10/4 break at 79-82. Maier has a strong frame at 6 feet, 200 pounds and pitches with regular effort and good arm speed through a high-3/4 slot. (Rode)

Cape Cod- Maier was one of the biggest breakout prospects of the summer. He threw 19 innings during a strong collegiate debut at British Columbia in 2020, but UBC did not compete in 2021, so this summer in the Cape was a serious coming-out party for the talented righty. Through 21.2 innings at Y-D, Maier has a 4.56 ERA and a 24-6 K-BB mark, but his stuff is far better than the ERA indicates. Sturdily built at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, Maier is a converted infielder with a clean three-quarters arm action and moderate effort. He ran his heater up to 96 mph this summer and topped out at 95 in our viewing, sitting comfortably at 92-93 for the first few innings, then dropping to 89-90 in the fourth. He located well to both sides and had solid life on the heater, with above-average spin rates in the 2300-2500 rpm range.

But most impressively, Maier showed the makings of a plus slider and an above-average changeup. His 80-83 mph slider featured tight tilt and elite spin rates as high as 2973 rpm, resulting in repeated empty swings. He backdoored it for a called strike at will against lefties and got righties to chase it down and away. He throws his circle changeup with conviction in the 84-87 mph range, and it has excellent deception and good sink, with spin rates between 1800-2000 rpm. He also threw his changeup effectively right-on-right, resulting in both swing-throughs and weak contact. Maier's feel for his wipeout secondary stuff was a revelation, particularly for a Canadian with just 19 collegiate innings under his belt. He's got a chance to rocket up draft boards in 2022, especially if he transfers as expected to a high-profile power five program.

Adam Maier, a University of British Columbia commit, showcases athleticism at various positions in the infield and outfield, while also being one of the more dominant pitchers in his state class as well. On the mound, Adam showcased a 86-88 FB range with late arm-side run. His SL, a legit out-pitch for Maier, comes in 80-81 with sharp late action sweep. Adam also features a good sinking change as a 3rd pitch and a developing CB to fill-out his arsenal.
A true dual-player, Maier stays inside the ball with quick-hands, a calm stride, which allows his fast-twitch frame create a consistent swing that has shown 100+mph exit velocity. Defensively he is durable by having started at all infield spots, and showcased games in the OF with ease.
