5-foot-11, 170-pound. At the plate, Smallwood had a max exit velocity of 79 mph. Sets up in a tall open stance and had a quick stride. Bat speed was efficient, displayed an uphill swing plane and a front foot finish. Found lots of barrels through his rounds. Up the middle approach. While in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 77 mph; has soft hands, athletic feet, and a quick exchange. Had a high ¾ slot and consistent accuracy to the bag. The athletic recruit showcased his speed with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.61.

SS/2B Evan Smallwood (2023) easily had the biggest swing of the game in a 4-2 win over Spanish Fort. Hitting at the top of the order for the 7A Jaguars, Smallwood is playing a big role early on in his tenure at the varsity level. At 5-11, 170 pounds, the right-handed hitting shortstop stepped up to the plate in a huge spot with a chance to blow things open in the 4th. With the bases loaded, Smallwood jumped on the first pitch he saw against a reliever and lined it down the left field line for a bases-clearing, three-run double that proved to be the difference in the game. Line drive-type hitter that has some twitch and solid actions for a sophomore. Showed some versatility playing different positions (SS, CF) for Spain Park in this contest.

5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic frame. Athletic at the plate, Smallwood recorded an exit velocity of 89 mph. Sets up in a balanced stance with a compact load. Bat speed is above average and exhibits simple swing plane. Found lots of barrels during his rounds. Base hit approach. In the infield, recorded a position velocity of 80 mph; shows sure hands, a clean exchange, and consistent feet. Had a quick arm action with consistent accuracy to the bag. Established speed as one of his strengths with an efficient 60 time of 6.84. On the mound, fastball Threw his fastball 75-77 mph with a max of 78 mph; showed control in the zone. Threw a sharp curveball (59-62) with decent control. His changeup (66-68) had arm side control and fading action.

Another young arm with solid mechanics and athletic delivery. He showed a high ¾ arm slot and works downhill very well, allowing him to pound the lower half of the zone with the pitches. The fastball was 74- 76 mph and the breaking ball showed late 12/6 action with late depth. He showed confidence in the change up and the pitch showed some sink to it. Does a lot of things well as a player. Showed nice hip flexibility and lateral movement during the infield session and worked well through the throw to 1B. Fairly wide, even stance with the feet with the hands set fairly low. The front foot gets down quickly and the hands get to the launch position on time. Handles the barrel to all fields from a level swing plane and looks to be a “2 hole” type hitter.

Showed a nice, easy delivery from a high ¾ arm slot. The FB was up to 75 mph and the spin rates were fairly impressive in the upper 2000’s to upper 2100’s. The pitch also showed some late cut. He showed a nice breaking ball in the lower 60’s that showed nice vertical depth and tight spin. The spin rates on the pitch were in the mid to upper 2100’s. Nice makeup on the mound for the ‘23 RHP. Very athletic player that also ran a 6.82 60 yard dash at the event. Very compact approach at the plate with even feet and a simple front side which allows him to get the barrel to the hitting zone on time. There is slight tilt in the swing plane and he showed nice strength in the hands. Handles the barrel very well and can hit to all fields. Actions at SS were fluid and it seemed “easy”. The feet worked extremely well and the glove action is impressive. Showed a ton of good qualities on the dirt. The arm strength is nice for a ‘23 and should continue to get stronger over the years. An interesting ‘23 to keep an eye on.
