Preseason All-State Middle Infield Analysis

Over the course of the next week, PBR Colorado will break down the Preseason All-State event by position. We began our look with the catchers and outfielders, corners, today we look at the middles.
Middle Infield Analysis:
Hayden Ambuehl SS / 2B / Lewis Palmer, CO / 20205-foot-11,165-pound right hand hitting MIF who ran a 6.84 laser timed 60. Has some juice hitting from the right side with an open athletic stance and a pronounced leg kick. Lands on line and hands back before firing the lower half with some explosion. Has some hand strength and whip getting the barrel through the zone with uphill tilt and stayed on the ball through extension. Exit velocity was 82 mph off the pitch. Feet were quiet and approach was direct with soft hands catching it out front. Quick arm throwing from a three-quarter arm slot with an infield velocity of 78 mph.

Justin Boyd SS / OF / Legend , CO / 2019The 6-foot-1, 195-pound highly projectable right hand hitter ran a 6.54 laser timed 60. Athletic slightly open stance with a small pick up to stride landing on line. Hands were strong through the zone with some whip in the bat. Lower half finishes with some explosion. Swing gets on plane early and shows uphill tilt with gap to gap power. Exit velo was 96 mph off the pitch. Feet work through the ball, glove presents out front, and quick clean exchange at center. Polished actions, showed arm speed throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 87 mph.

Ty Chapman SS / 3B / Grandview Highschool, CO / 2021A 6-foot, 155-pound right hand hitting SS/3B ran a 6.99 laser timed 60. Open stance starting slightly crouched. Strides forward and lands on line. Rolls front shoulder close at load with minimal hand movement. Bat path is flat with line drive tendencies and is quick out of the zone. Exit velocity was 75 mph off the pitch. . Works behind the ball on defense with active feet on approach. Exchange is clean and moves to a longer arm circle throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 74 mph.

Nelson Gibbens SS / 2B / Windsor HS, CO / 2021A 5-foot-11, 180-pound right hand hitting MIF who ran a 7.01 laser timed 60. Upright square stance with a quick hand load and a big leg trigger on the pitch. Swing translates to line drive tendencies finishing the lower half completely. Exit velo was 79 mph off the pitch. Showed some rhythm pre and post catch and some feel for the position. Soft hands on reception to a low three-quarter arm slot with positional velocity of 72 mph.

Trenton Harris SS / Broomfield, CO / 2020The 5-foot-10, 160-pound right hand hitting SS ran a 6.87 laser timed 60. Starts slightly open and lands on line after a small pick up and put down striding forward. Hands load back with rhythm and a vertical bat. Swing is low effort and head stays quiet on contact with solid balance in the swing. Lower half finishes completely and exit velo was 88 mph off the pitch with some gap to gap power potential. Shows well defensively presenting nice actions that are translatable to game play. Feet are active and work outside the ball early working through at catch. Hands present well and are soft with quick gather to center. Arm played at 79 mph with accuracy.

Cameron Hassert SS / 2B / Silver Creek, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 13 / POS: 1
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound left hand hitting MIF who ran a 6.90 laser timed 60. Smooth load and long stride on the pitch. Swing is fluid with an uphill path to the ball. Lower half drives on the pitch. Exit velocity was 90 mph off the pitch with pull side power. . Active feet on approach with solid glove presentation. Clean exchange to a longer arm action throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 76 mph across the infield.

Aaron Loucks 2B / SS / Rocky Mountain, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 47 / POS: 1
A 5-foot-8, 135-pound right hand hitting MIF who ran a 7.06 laser timed 60. Stands square at the plate with a slow load back and big stride coming forward with timing. Long swing through the zone with extension out front. Line drive tendencies and control to all fields. 81 mph exit velocity off the pitch. Active feet and gains ground on the ball with solid glove presentation. Soft hands to a clean centered exchange. Arm action is short and quick and throws from a low three quarter arm slot at 78 mph across the infield.

Zander McFee SS / RHP / Natrona County HS, WY / 2020The 5-foot-10, 160-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.79 laser timed 60. Wide set up at the plate with a small lift and place stride. Swing path is uphill and contact comes off a firm front side. Exit velocity was 78 mph off the pitch. Showed well in the field with fluid motion and solid mechanics. Arm is high 3/4 and accurate across the diamond at 70 mph. Simple motion on the mound with rhythm. Falls to the plate from balance and release with good extension out front. Fastball sits 73-75 mph with some run. Curve flashed 11/5 break at 66-67 mph and he threw a 69-70 mph change with feel.

Blake Mosenteen SS / OF / Holyoke High, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 52 / POS: 7
A 6-foot, 165-pound athletic right hand hitting MIF ran a 7.08 laser timed 60. Open slightly crouched stance. Hands load back and bat is vertical at separation with a pronounced leg lift to stride landing open. Hands are quick and showed some strength through the zone. Bat path is flat with a slight recoil at finish. Lower half finishes completely with some aggression and posted an exit velo of 81 mph off the pitch. Feet are active on approach to catch. Fields out front to a clean exchange. Arm goes down on hand break and arm circle is a little longer throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 76 mph.

Alex Niccum SS / RHP / Eaglecrest, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 126 / POS: 15
A 5-foot-11, 160-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.83 laser timed 60. Square athletic stance with hands back. Hands have small load back with a slight bat wrap and a simple pick up striding forward landing on line. Head stays quiet and behind the barrel on contact. Finishes the lower half completely with an exit velo of 79 mph off the pitch. Active feet on approach with solid glove presentation and fields slightly right of center. Clean exchange with a short arm action throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 72 mph across the infield. On the mound his motion is slow and deliberate. Falls to the plate from balance and arm sits in a 3/4 slot. Fastball was 73-75 mph with late arm side run. Curve showed sweeping break at 61-64 mph. Change had late sink and sat 67-68 mph.

Vincent Sauza SS / RHP / Boulder High School, CO / 2020A 5-foot-10, 150-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.34 60. Hits from the right side with an athletic slightly open stance. Toe tap to landing on line at stride. Hands load back with a slight arm bar. Swing initiates early and bat path is flat with a high finish. Exit velocity was 76 mph. Feet are active on approach with solid glove presentation and eyes following to the catch. Clean exchange to a longer arm circle throwing from a three-quarter arm slot at 69 mph. Stands tall on the mound with a drop and drive motion to the plate. Long over the top arm with good extension out front. Fastball was 76 mph with straight life. Curve sat 64-65 with sweeping 11/5 actions and his change showed late sink at 70-71 mph.

Jack Vitry SS / 2B / Mullen High School, CO / 2020A 6-foot-1, 170-pound right hand hitting MIF who ran a 6.99 laser timed 60. Upright relaxed stance showing some rhythm in the swing. Hands load back fluid to a slight arm bar. Short to the ball with a flat path and a high finish. Lower half finishes completely and head stays behind the ball on contact. Exit velocity was 75 mph off the pitch. Feet are active on approach and work through the ball. Showed some rhythm pre and post catch and some feel for the position. Soft hands on reception to a low three-quarter arm slot with positional velocity of 65 mph.

Carter Young SS / RHP / Kelly Walsh, WY / 2020A 5-foot-10, 140-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.23 laser timed 60. Hits from the left side with a square stance with a simple pick up and put down landing balanced and in an athletic position. Hands load back with rhythm to separation and bat path showed an uphill path and lower half finishes completely. Exit velocity was 81 mph off the pitch. Active feet on approach receiving the ball quartered open with a step through to get back in line to throw. Arm circle is small throwing from a three quarter arm slot at 78 mph. Solid mechanics on the mound with a drop and drive delivery. Arm stays over the top with good speed and extension out front. Fastball was 84-85 mph with late sink. Curve flashed tight spin and 11/5 shape at 71-72 mph. Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed and was 73-74 mph with downward movement.
