Colorado Top Prospect Games Pitching Analysis

The Top Prospect Games took place August 4th and 5th at Historic Cherry Creek High School. 89 prospects were on hand for the two day event that included individual evaluations and games. Players from the 2020-2021 classes and some select 2022 were on hand and did not disappoint during this event.

Over the course of the next week we will break down individual performances by position at this year's Colorado Top Prospect Games. We began our look with the catching position, outfield position, corners, middle infielders and we conclude our look with the pitching position.
Best of the Best
Benjamin Cole LHP / 1B / Mountain Vista, CO / 20206-foot-2, 220-pound Left Handed Pitcher. Tall and fall delivery, directionally in line, square to home, athletic in extension and finish. Fluid, clean arm action, can get long, breaks hands early, quick out front, over the top slot, some effort throughout. Fastball was straight, slight run, ranged 78-80 mph. Curveball had 2/7 shape, breaks early out of the hand, 62-63 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, flashed sink in the zone, ranged 70-71 mph.

J.T. Miller RHP / OF / Regis Jesuit High School, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 51 / POS: 11
6-foot-3, 175-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Righty on the mound and throws from an over-the-top arm angle, average arm speed. Toe lift to balance point with average effort leads to some rhythm and helps land in line. Straight fastball averages between 82-83 mph. Gets good extension out front on his curve ball. Tight spin and late 11/5 break. Pitch sat 62-63 and was an excellent out pitch in his two innings of work.

Greysen Carter RHP / OF / Fairview, CO / 20216-foot-2, 185-pound switch hitting RHP/OF who ran a 7.30 60. At the plate he stands balanced with a slight crouch from both sides. He uses a big leg trigger to start the swing and loads hard on the back side. Swing is level through the zone with good extension out front. Exit velocity was 87 mph from both sides of the plate. In the outfield he takes good angles and has a big arm from an over the top slot. Arm played at 90 mph. Power pitcher on the mound with max effort in his delivery. Drop and drive motion with good extension on the release. Arm is over the top and live. Fastball was 88-90 mph and over powered several hitters in his inning of work. He mixed in a 64-66 mph curve with tight spin and 11/5 break.

Sawyer Shepherd RHP / 1B / Resurrection Christian, CO / 20206-foot-4, 210-pound right hand hitting RHP/1B. Wide set up at the plate with a slow load on the pitch. Weight and hands fire through the zone. Swing path is uphill and he hits for power to all fields. Exit velocity was 95 mph. In the field he has good feet and instincts around the bag. Glove to hand transfer was quick on balls to second base and arm played at 82 mph. Delivery repeats, tall and fall type, lands square and stays on line and balanced. Arm action is loose and over the top. Fastball sat 83-85 mph, showed ability to command. Curveball has 12/6 shape, had bite with spin and shape, 74-75 mph.

Carson Brown RHP / OF / Rock Canyon, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 11 / POS: 5
5-foot-10, 165-pound Right handed Pitcher. Stretch only pitcher, but we have seen him from the full, tall balance point, directionally in line to home, lands square, finishes athletically, occasionally falls to first base side. Long, loose arm action, alters between over the top and high ¾ arm slot, regular effort throughout. Fastball showed some sink, sat 83-85 mph. Curveball had 12/6 shape, in the zone, sat 63-64 mph. Changeup sank, near fastball arm speed, ranged from 68-72 mph.

Jimmy Hebenstreit LHP / OF / Heritage High School, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 30 / POS: 3
6-foot-2, 175-pound Left Handed Pitcher. Tall and athletic on the mound. From balance he drives hard to the plate, landing in-line with long extension out front. Arm is fast and from an over the top slot. Showed the ability to locate both sides of the zone. Fastball was 80-82 with good back door run. Curve breaks late in the zone with 2/7 shape and sat 63-64 mph. Change was his best secondary pitch and was 76-77 with late sink.

SPYE TURNBEAUGHRHP / 1B / ARAPAHOE HS, CO / 20206-foot-7, 190-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Delivery repeats, smooth motion and mechanics to the plate. From balance he drives to the plate with an over the top arm slot and good extension out front on the pitch. He uses his 6-7 frame well to get the pitch on you in a hurry. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with late arm side run. Curve is thrown hard with tight spin and late 12/6 break and sat 71-74 mph. Change up was his best secondary pitch with near fastball arm speed. Pitch showed late sink in the zone and sat 73-74 mph. He added a 74 mph slider with backdoor action.

Will Clair RHP / OF / Natrona County, WY / 20205-foot-11, 170-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Athletic pitcher on the mound, uses a quick motion and hard drive to the plate on the pitch. Arm is over the top, short back and long through at the release. Landing is in-line and stays athletic through the pitch. Fastball was 81-83 with good location in the zone and late arm side run. Curve showed tight spin and late 11/5 break and sat 65-66. He added a 75-77 mph change with near fastball arm speed.

Brooks Gerig RHP / 2B / Regis Jesuit, CO / 20226-foot-1, 160-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Fluid repeatable traits on the mound. From balance he has some sink and drive to the plate. Arm stays consistent from a high ¾ slot. Showcased two effective pitches in his two innings of work. Fastball was 77-78 mph with arm side run. Curve showed tight spin and 11/5 break and sat 64-65 mph. Good looking pitcher for the 2022 class.

Connor Kane RHP / Legend, CO / 20206-foot-3, 160-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Delivery repeats, tall and fall type, loads lift to back side, coiled at top, lands square and stays on line and balanced. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball runs to arm side, 76-78 mph, showed ability to command. Curveball has 11/5 shape, had bite with spin and shape, 67-69 mph. Repeatable actions and he worked two efficient innings at the TPG.

Mason Kroll RHP / 1B / Brighton High School, CO / 2020Rankings StateRank: 116 / POS: 28
6-foot-3, 160-pound Right Handed Pitcher. Stands tall on the with a slow lift to balance. Coils slightly to the back side and then uses a slight sink and drive motion on the pitch. Arm is high ¾ and stays consistent on all pitches. Fastball was 77-80 with good command away in the zone. Curveball was 68-69 mph with sweeping 11/5 break. Was an effective secondary pitch during his two innings of work.

Liam McAndrew RHP / OF / Boulder HS, CO / 20206-foot-3, 165-pound Right handed Pitcher. Stretch pitcher who uses a high leg kick and rocks on his backside. Lands in-line on the delivery and falls off at times to the right side. Arm is long and over the top. He showed good extension out front and feel for his off-speed pitch. Fastball was 76-78 mph with location down in the zone. Curve sat 67-69 mph with sweeping 11/5 break.
