Throughout the Badger State, Sectionals played out on Tuesday, June 4 to determine what 20 teams will be making an appearance at the State Tournament in Appleton at Fox Cities Stadium. The Prep Baseball Wisconsin staff will continue its comprehensive coverage by breaking down what to expect from all four divisions at the final stage of the WIAA season in preview form.

The WIAA State Tournament is set to take place between June 10-13, concluding on Thursday by crowning four state champions to wrap up an eventful 2024 season.

Our staff continues our series of previews by next taking a look into the Division 2 field, where No. 20 Mosinee leads the way as the No. 1 seed. They are followed by the likes of talented groups in Edgewood, Kettle Moraine Lutheran and La Crosse Logan, who each look to continue their magical runs by hoisting gold this week.

EDGEWOOD (20-6)

The Crusaders have been an under-the-radar program for the entirety of the season, pulling off an upset while using their senior pitchers and star juniors at the plate to make their way to Appleton.

Edgewood features two workhorses on the mound who continue to excel at the varsity level between RHP/OF’s Henry Bishop (2024; Depauw University commit) and Steffen Mello (2024; Wisconsin-Oshkosh). Both have been heavily relied upon during this stretch and throughout all of 2024, as they were a combined 12-2 on the mound entering Sectionals. Bishop secured another win on the bump against No. 25 Reedsburg in the Sectional Semifinal, striking out six over the course of six innings. Mello closed that ballgame with a clean seventh inning in a narrow 3-2 victory, while then throwing 6.2 innings in the next game against a hot Waupun team to punch their ticket to Appleton.

Bishop added a home run at the plate in that matchup against the Beavers, too. Both arms have been productive on the offensive end with the bats, each putting together competitive at bats in the middle of this lineup for Edgewood.

SS Preston Yaucher (2025; Penn State) has looked the part as one of the top 2025s in the state throughout his 2024 campaign, entering Sectional play with a .427 BA and a team-high 32 hits. The middle infielder is a staple at the top of the order for the Crusaders, all while swiping 12 bags and reaching base in over half of his plate appearances with a .517 OBP. Yaucher will be key for Edgewood on both offense and defense to extend their season at Fox Cities Stadium.

Not too many bats in the state have been as productive as C/OF Bennett Cagle (2025), who has emerged as an uncommitted name-to-know. He entered Tuesday with a .419 BA with an impressive 17 extra base hits. Cagle only added to those totals against Reedsburg and the Warriors, producing a 7-for-8 day at the plate in two games. The right-handed batter finished with a home run and a double in game one, combining for four RBIs. He has held the two-spot in the lineup for most of the season, and will look to be a table-setter and run-producer all in one—starting on Wednesday.

INF Jack Halloran (2025) and 1B Seth Myers (2025) are two more juniors who round out the top of this order in a strong offensive lineup, as their production will be necessary against a tough, fundamental unit in Kettle Moraine Lutheran. RHP Carson Jesberger (2025) may be an arm to witness in relief for the Crusaders, too. The right-hander has tallied the highest amount of innings behind Bishop and Mello, and may see some time on the mound in a championship matchup.

Edgewood kicks off the action on Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium as the No. 3 seed. They will battle against the aforementioned Chargers—looking to make some noise and add to their 20-win season.

KETTLE MORAINE LUTHERAN (25-5)

Throughout the middle portion of the season, the Chargers rattled off 21 straight wins after dropping their first three matchups of the year. They have been one of the toughest outs in Division 2 for a couple of seasons, and now find themselves at the State Tournament for the first time in school history.

RHP/INF Landon Hagenow (2024) has been the heart and soul of this program for a couple of seasons now, and has maintained his steady production as a two-way star. Hagenow is currently hitting .392 from the middle of their lineup, along with tossing 33.2 innings with a 3-1 record on the mound. The right-hander has tallied three complete games during his 2024 campaign, finishing the year with a 1.87 ERA. Hagenow features a mid-80s FB paired with a sharp CB that keeps hitters off balance. He used his strong arsenal to take down Pewaukee, twirling a complete game while striking out seven and walking zero in a 4-1 victory.

He is joined by RHP Reed Ratay (2024) on the bump, a solid right-hander who’s accumulated the most wins on the year at seven. Ratay holds a 1.34 ERA and has struck out eight batters for every one walk.

1B/RHP Brett Biondich (2026; Texas Christian) has been the headliner from the middle of their order, as the No. 6 ranked sophomore in Wisconsin’s 2026 class, fresh off of a perfect 4-for-4 performance against New Berlin West in the Sectional Final, tallying five RBIs with the help of a home run and a double. Biondich has seen time in relief and in the starting role for Kettle Moraine Lutheran on the mound, too. The right-hander has rushed his FB up to 92 mph in prior looks this spring—emerging as a go-to arm for this unit.

Arguably the biggest difference-maker for the Chargers this season has been the depth of their offense. They enter Appleton hitting .343 in 30 games, much of the credit handed to the aforementioned Hagenow and Biondich. Yet it has been a couple of their role players who have done the job for head coach Darrell Washburn and Kettle Moraine Lutheran. OF Jackson Wallin (2024), INF/RHP Jackson Kobylarczyk (2025) and INF Adam Zylka (2025) have each hit over .375 this season, all while playing solid defense on the diamond. It was the combination of Kobylarczyk and Zylka that gave this group a conference championship, as all three look to stay hot at the plate this week.

The Chargers don’t make too many mistakes on the field, as their solid, fundamental defense and small ball approach has taken them to new heights in WIAA play, as they’ll look to continue their chase to gold on Wednesday.

LA CROSSE LOGAN (17-10)

The Rangers entered the playoffs with a 12-10 record—finishing 4-4 in their final eight matchups while earning the No. 6 seed in their Regional. They found some magic as a program over the last two weeks though, tallying five straight wins to advance to Appleton and compete for the Division 2 crown.

La Crosse Logan notched upset wins over Baldwin-Woodville, Prescott, Altoona and Medford in one of the toughest routes to state—proving they are battle-tested.

INF Bradley Check (2025) has been the leader of this unit—racking up a team-high 28 hits entering Sectional play. Check provided a hit and an RBI in the win over the Raiders in the Sectional Final, as he has been a staple in the middle of their order in his junior season. The junior has showcased some pop in the past in a strong 5-foot-10, 210-pound frame, as he has provided their lone home run of the year.

OF Johnny Leaver (2024) will be looked to in the leadoff spot for the Rangers, as he finished with two runs scored and an RBI against Medford—igniting the offense and leading this group to plate seven runs. OF/RHP Kobe Szafran (2024) and C/OF Jackson Bosch (2026) have each tallied 22 hits through Regional play for La Crosse Logan—looking to maintain that momentum on this magical run.

On the mound, RHP/OF Tyler Rumsey (2024) led the team in wins with six before pitching at Sectionals. Rumsey got the win over the Railroaders on Tuesday—improving his record to 7-2 on the season. He is joined by RHP/INF’s Lucas Eilertson (2024) and Owen Check (2026), who may see some action on the bump, whether it’s in relief or in a spot-start.

The Rangers have proven to compete with some of the toughest teams in the Division 2 field, as they will be tested once again in Appleton. As the No. 4 seed, La Crosse Logan will play against No. 20 Mosinee in the second game on Wednesday morning, starting approximately at 11:30 a.m. in Appleton.

MOSINEE (24-5)

The Indians were one of a handful of Division 2 programs to be ranked on the Power 25 this season, as they remain the lone team in that group to advance to Appleton to compete for a state championship—making an appearance after falling in the semifinals in 2022.

It starts with their two-way star in RHP/INF Keagen Jirschele (2024; South Dakota State), their long-time leadoff hitter and one of their top arms on their roster. Jirschele enters the State Tournament with a .400 BA, boasting team-highs in runs scored (42), hits (38), doubles (9) and home runs (5). His presence on the basepaths has been a difference-maker, too. The senior has swiped 37 bags over the course of the season, only being caught once. He has tossed the most innings on the mound as well—throwing 54.2 frames with a 9-1 overall record and low 0.77 ERA. Jirschele has continued to do it all for this unit, and will be heavily relied upon if Mosinee looks to end their season on a winning note.

C Gavin Obremski (2024; Rock Valley JC) proved to be one of the main difference-makers in a highly anticipated semifinal matchup against No. 16 Notre Dame Academy—finishing 3-for-3 with an RBI in a narrow 2-1 victory. He accumulated over half of his team’s hits on a day when offense was hard to come by—elevating his importance as a switch-hitting catcher in this lineup. Obremski followed it up by reaching base twice against Xavier in a 2-0 win, as he is currently hitting .386 with 11 extra base hits.

His main battery mate in RHP Garrett Shupe (2024; North Dakota State) has been electric on the mound, too. Shupe notched a win over the Tritons after allowing one unearned run over the course of six innings—punching out seven batters in the process. He enters Appleton with a 0.33 ERA, going 6-1 with three complete games in 2024. The right-hander has only allowed two earned runs in his 42 innings pitched, impressing in all facets of his game during the season.

As for the rest of the offense, INF/C Cameron Ziebell (2024; Wisconsin-Stout) enjoyed one of the strongest days at their Sectional at the plate, finishing with three RBIs out of their four on the day. The senior hit a home run against the Hawks in the Sectional Final—going 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a 2-0 win. He also tallied an RBI against Notre Dame Academy earlier in the game, which proved to be the game-winning hit.

OF/RHP Taylor Lemanski (2024; Wisconsin-La Crosse) and CIF Brady Lokken (2025) continue to be staples toward the top of the order for Mosinee, as each has enjoyed a solid season at the plate. Lemanski may be seen in a closer’s role for the Indians, too. The right-hander has tallied four saves in 15.2 innings of work—allowing zero earned runs in clutch situations. RHP Zachery Nechuta (2025) joins Lemanski in the bullpen as a go-to arm, as the junior is currently 4-0 on the season.

The Great Northern Conference champions have been tested with a tough non-conference schedule and challenging run to the playoffs, despite being the No. 1 seed in their respective Regional. They travel to Appleton as the favorites amongst the pool of Division 2 competition, and will look to uphold that title with two wins, which all gets started on Wednesday.
