PBT Wisconsin Open: Takeaways

Illinois & Wisconsin Scouting Staff

We continued our summer tournament circuit this past weekend with the PBT Wisconsin Open in Mauston, Wisconsin. This event targeted some of the top 15/17U prospects from the state, as well as a couple surrounding states. Read on below to see which players stood out to our scouting staff from the event.

15U

CRB 2027

RHP Matthew Chico (Lakeview, 2027)
Chico got the call to start game one of the weekend for CRB and delivered a stellar outing. Over five innings of work, Chico allowed just one hit, one walk, and no runs. Later in the weekend, Chico made a relief appearance in their semi-final victory where he tossed two and one-thirds scoreless to help his team advance. The 5-foot-7, 136-pound, right-hander was able to run his fastball up to 77 mph with a slider that generated swings-and-misses to pair. All in all, Chico’s age and frame suggest that he will be able to add during his high school years which makes the to-be freshman an interesting follow.

SS/RHP Waijdy El Halabi (Elmwood Park, 2027)
El Halabi was a consistent barrel with the ability to adjust to offspeed and flashed situational hitting. On the other side of the ball, the athletic shortstop was deployed up the middle and showed feel for his glove as an above average defender. On the mound, El Halabi made some important relief appearances and delivered when his squad needed him. The right-handed arm ran his fastball up to 78 mph and sat 75-77 mph. At 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, El Halabi has room to add inside an already strong build. The to-be freshman features some lean strength throughout while moving well on the base paths and in the box.

RHP Justice Hernandez (New Trier, 2027)
After showing well at the Rock Summer Championships 15U and claiming a title at Grand Park during the Grand Park Summer Championships, Hernandez showed well again - this time at the PBT Wisconsin Open. After the previous looks at the electric right-hander, Hernandez’s stuff was on par with what was expected from him. After mounting a comeback against the squad they would eventually claim the weekend’s championship against, Hernandez’s relief appearance on Friday was dominant as he closed the door to secure a 6-5 victory. Over that one inning, Hernandez ran his fastball up to 84 mph and showed his wipeout slider, recording a strikeout in the process. Without allowing a hit, Hernandez’s first showing helped put CRB into the bracket games on Sunday. In his second appearance against MBA, Hernandez was dominant as he recorded six K’s over six innings of work. The wiry, 5-foot-10 RHP allowed two runs on just three hits which culminated in an 18-2 victory to win the tournament. The look from New Trier’s ‘27 graduate keeps him as a high-follow in Illinois as the summer circuit continues on.

3B/SS Alex Vale (Maine South, 2027)
5-foot-9, 120 pounds, was featured as the CRB leadoff hitter this weekend and showed his athletic traits from the jump. At the plate, Vale oozed confidence as he looked comfortable in all counts. The RHH was crucial in CRB’s semi-final and championship game as his hitting led to numerous multi-run innings. On the base paths, Vale was nearly always swiping an extra base with above average speed. In the field, he was deployed at third for the entirety of the tournament and flashed the ability to adjust his arm slot at will.

OF Isaiah Martin (Lane Tech, 2027)
At 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, Martin is a tooled-up outfielder with athletic features on both sides of the ball. At the plate, Martin features a smooth swing that was consistently on the barrel. The right-hander’s quick hands paired with clear confidence in the box showed well in the heart of the CRB order. Across the weekend, Martin had a plethora of timely hits that either plated runs or kickstarted an inning. In the field, he was deployed in left and center with a roughly even split. The to-be sophomore showed the ability to cover an immense amount of ground as well as flashing above average arm strength.

Eau Claire A's 15U Blue

1B James Radabaugh (Eau Claire Memorial, 2027)
At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Radabaugh’s towering presence was clear at the plate when his loud barrel caught eyes this weekend in Mauston. At the plate, the to-be sophomore showed quick hands that got the barrel around on time. After contact, the majority of Radabaugh’s hits were hard line drives that found their way into gaps with power to all fields. With the imposing frame and ability to move well, Radabaugh is an interesting name to follow in Wisconsin’s 2027 class moving forward.

3B Alex Johnson (Eau Claire Memorial, 2027)
Johnson would have an impressive weekend, showing a wiry 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame with athletic, loose actions on both sides of the ball. The right-handed hitter showed a line-drive approach coming from an upright setup with athleticism that allowed his tools to play up at the plate. At the hot corner, Johnson showed athletic movements and threw from a low 3/4s arm slot.

Franklin Crew

CF Dillon Herling  (Franklin, 2027)
Displaying a strong and athletic proportionate 5-foot-7, 155-pound frame with plenty of room for growth, Herling helped the Franklin Crew defeat GTS 16-6. The right handed batter went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and three RBI’s. Mechanically, Herling bats with a slightly open stance and portrays a small stride with a quick bat that has slight lift to it. He is quick out of the box and quick in the field as he tracks down every ball hit in his general direction.

GTS - Class of 2027

C Travis Edwards (Waterford Union, 2027)
Possessing a slim and athletic 5-foot-10, 125-pound frame with plenty of room for growth, Edwards had a large impact for GTS in their game against the Franklin Crew. Edwards didn’t commit a single out as he went 1-for-1 at the plate with a hit by pitch and a walk with 2 RBIs. Mechanically, the right handed batter displays a slightly open and loose stance with loose hands and a level swing as he fully extends through the ball. In addition to his offense, Edward’s defense was impressive as well. Being the plate, Edwards was a brick wall not allowing anything past him. He also caught a runner stealing second base in the first inning with a quick throw placing the ball in the perfect spot.

JBA Clutch 15U

RHP Christian Rehm (Stratford, 2028)
Projectable, 6-foot-2, 160-pound frame with room to add. Playing up a year, Rehm showed upside in his start Saturday afternoon with a loose arm action that coupled well with a simple, repeatable delivery. The right-handed arm showed two primary pitches, a fastball and a curveball. Rehm ran his fastball up to 79 mph while it sat at 76-78 mph throughout the game. As for his breaking pitch, Rehm threw the pitch at 64-66 mph and spun it at 2000-2100 rpm. Despite the end stat line, Rehm showed clear upside playing against older competition and is a name to keep an eye on in Wisconsin’s 2028 class going forward.

UTL Cash Olsen (Tomahawk, 2028)
Another JBA name playing up a class, Olsen hit atop of the JBA lineup and got work all over the field with some innings at shortstop and others in the outfield. Olsen flashed across the weekend, notably on Saturday with a loud opposite-field barrel. The to-be freshman was comfortable in the box and featured a smooth and simple swing from the right-side. At 5-foot-9, 155 pounds, Olsen’s athletic build suggests room for growth over the coming years.

MBA 15U Green

SS Layne Guardiola (Wauwatosa West, 2027)
At 5-foot-6, 135-pounds, Guardiola has a smaller frame for his age, but certainly plays like anything but. The shortstop was featured throughout the weekend barreling balls and showed a knock for getting on base, however that may have been. At the top of the MBA lineup that reached the weekend’s final game, Guardiola showed up when his team needed it. Despite the eventual loss, Guardiola went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on Friday and hit a timely triple in Sunday’s championship game. The two examples of his play sum up what he was capable of showing as the slappy, undersized, middle infielder made a name for himself this past weekend.

C Mason Hahn (Hamilton, 2027)
Displaying an athletic 5-foot-10, 173-pound frame, Hahn possessed quality tools on both sides of the ball all tournament. The right-handed catcher proved to be an active and willing blocker at the plate with above average arm strength behind the dish. Showcased the ability to frame the ball with, showing soft hands with feel for pulling strikes. Offensively, he exuded confidence in his approach and was able to adjust well to offspeed. His strong bat-to-ball skills and advanced swing allowed for him to find multiple barrels across the weekend. He had a strong showing in Saturday’s 14-5 victory for MBA, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a 2-RBI double and an RBI-single. He would continue to show strong feel for the barrel as he tripled in the championship game as well. The multi-tooled catcher looked to be a sophomore to keep an eye on in Wisconsin.

SS Trevor Debriyn (Menasha, 2025)

The right handed batter went 3-for-3 at the plate with two ground balls near shortstop and a line drive to left field. DeBriyn is quick out of the box as he was able to beat out one of his ground balls to shortstop. Mechanically, DeBriyn bats in a crouched stance and displays a double tap stride with a smooth swing and full extension. On the other side of the ball, DeBriyn came in to relief for 5 Star and absolutely shoved. The righty threw five innings not allowing any runs and one hit while striking out six. Mechanically, DeBriyn fully extends his leg on his leg kick and throws out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a smooth delivery. He works quick on the mound, not allowing the batter much time to gather his thoughts. DeBriyn throws a 74-78 mph fastball that touched 79 mph in which he throws a mix of arm and glove side. The right-handed hitter is set up in a wider base with his hands near his head and utilizes a simple trigger to get in a position to hit with a slightly uphill swing path. In multiple looks this weekend, Halloran maintained that momentum with a simple left-handed swing—barreling up pitches with ease. Mature 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame. Reddy was the difference-maker for his team right away on Thursday, tossing four scoreless innings on Thursday in a relief appearance through poor weather conditions. Reddy drives down the mound, throwing strikes at an efficient rate. He has shown well in front of our staff in live looks and in the showcase setting, this time rushing his FB up to 85 mph. The right-hander spins a SL as well, keeping hitters off balance in the process. He flashed a CH at times, but utilized his two pitches to overpower his opponents. Reddy continues to excel on the bump, as he will be in attendance at the Wisconsin State Games.

MIF Tristin Hundt (Sheboygan North, 2026)
Hundt showed quality actions at the plate this past weekend with a left-handed swing that seemed to routinely find the barrel. At the plate, the rising junior has an athletic setup and relies on his above-average bat speed to get into a position to hit. The infielder presents an athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame with plenty of room for added strength. Should be a name to follow as he both physically and mechanically matures.

RHP/INF Matthew Hietpas (Appleton North, 2026)
5-foot-10, 174-pound frame. While our staff wasn’t able to witness Hietpas compete on the mound this weekend, his bat from the leadoff spot provided some noise throughout the latter half of the tournament. Hietpas was 4-for-4 on Saturday, catching numerous barrels to set the table for his unit. The right-handed hitter showcased his power and confidence at the plate, using the pull-side and the middle of the field to notch base hits.
