MATC Scout Day: Takeaways

On Friday, August 30th, the Prep Baseball Wisconsin staff traveled to Milwaukee Area Tech to run the Stormers through a pro-style workout. There were around 30 prospects in attendance with a mix of both classes, and there were numerous players that showed well for themselves on the day. 

Today, we will be taking a look at a number of players that stood out from the day, with scouting reports and videos, below.

Position Players 

So. OF Carlito Collins (Notre Dame Prep, IL) is a toolsy athlete to know for the Stormers. Listed at 6-foot, 175-pounds, Collins has a dynamic power/speed combination with a 6.81 in the 60 and 95 mph max EV. The right-handed hitter has some twitch in his hands, working with a flatter path while displaying power to his pull-side with a max distance of 360’. He has well above-average BLAST metrics with an average bat-speed of 78.8 mph (T85.4 mph), as well as 22.1 mph average hand-speed. His athleticism easily translates to the outfield, boasting athletic actions with a strong arm that plays with carry (T85 mph). 

So. C/1B Jaiden Jung (Sun Prairie West, WI) looks to be a top returner for the Stormers this coming season, as he hit .279 in 111 at-bats with seven doubles, four triples and four home runs a year ago. He has a strong build with round shoulders, 6-foot, 195-pounds. He took one of the louder rounds of BP on the day, averaging 91.2 mph for his EV with a max of 97.4 mph. Jung worked to stay on top of the baseball throughout his round with quick/strong hands, staying flat through the zone while looking to keep the ball up the middle and to his pull-side. 

So. INF/OF Marco Falleti (Wilmot, WI) returns a .290 batting average in 107 at-bats from a season ago, also recording nine doubles and five home runs. He stands in a physical 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with rounded shoulders and lean strength throughout. The right-handed hitter juiced a couple balls throughout his round of BP, reaching up to 96 mph for his max EV. He has a longer swing that creates whip and bat-speed through the zone, looking to use the whole field throughout his round. 6.83 runner in the 60. 

Fr. OF Cole Wissen (Vandegrift, TX) stood out to start the day with his 6.60 in the 60. The right-handed hitter has a simple swing that works with a flat path, handsy operation, used the whole field throughout his round while staying balanced through impact. 

Two-way

So. OF Peyton Flees (Pacelli Catholic, WI) gave an intriguing two-way look in the workout. Listed at 6-foot-1, 200-pounds with evenly distributed strength, the right-handed hitter worked up to 92 mph for his max EV with quality bat-speed (77.2 mph avg.; T80.2 mph). He has a strong arm from the outfield, topping out at 93 mph from a crow hop, and his arm-strength easily transferred over to the mound. He has a simple delivery with a high front side, working slightly across his body into an over-the-top slot. His fastball played in the 84-87 mph range, setting up an 11/5 curveball at 69-72 mph and a knuckleball in the mid-60s with unpredictable action at times. 

PITCHERS 

Fr. RHP Ethan Engelbrecht (Oak Creek, WI) is a physical right-hander with a 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame. He has a controlled tempo on the mound with a high leg-kick into a slight tuck, drop/drive lower-half stays in-line to the plate, longer arm swing into a ¾ release. His fastball sat around 84-86 mph, topping out at 87 mph with run and finish through the zone. He showed both a curveball and a slider, with the curve playing more over the top at 71-73 mph and the slider showing tighter shape with depth at 73-76 mph. He featured a splitter in the 76-78 mph range, killing spin and playing mostly straight. His final offering was a cutter in the 79-81 mph range with a short wrinkle and lateral action. 

RSo. RHP Luke Klekamp (Oak Creek, WI) stands in at an athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, strong lower-half. The right-hander has a compact leg-lift and balance point, staying in his back side and driving down the mound in-line, medium/long arm circle that plays into a high ¾ release. His fastball cruised in the 85-86 mph range, playing mostly straight with some carry. Curveball showed tight 11/5 shape with depth, 70-75 mph. Cutter stayed in the 76-78 mph range, short lateral action to his glove-side at times. Splitter and changeup both played in the upper-70s, with the changeup showing slightly more run to the arm-side. 

Fr. RHP Jakeb Lequia (Chippewa Falls, WI) is a new face to watch out for. Listed at 5-foot-11, 185-pounds with wide shoulders and a strong lower-half. The right-hander has a controlled leg-lift into his balance point, sinks into his back leg and rides down the mound while staying in-line, long and clean arm swing that plays into a ¾ slot with looseness. His fastball played with some life out of the hand at 87-88 mph, topping out at 89 mph with running action to his arm-side. Curveball and slider are both thrown with arm-speed and play in the mid-70s, while the curveball has more downer shape and the slider flashed sharp 10/4 movement. Changeup sat right around 75-77 mph, thrown for strikes and showing up to 13” of run. 

So. RHP Michael Merline (Oak Creek, WI) stands out physically with his 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame, he has some strength throughout his build but also looks to still have room to add on more. His fastball played in the mid-80s, topping out at 87 mph with significant carry and angle due to his over-the-top slot. His curveball showed tight downer shape in the 74-75 mph range, playing with over 2,300 rpm at times. His final offering was a straight changeup with slight arm-side run at times, 76-78 mph. 

So. RHP George Benske (St. Thomas More, WI) had a quality showing throughout his ‘pen. 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, loose mover throughout with a clean, high ¾ release. Fastball played in the 84-85 mph range, topping out at 86 mph with carry through the zone. Curveball looks to have swing/miss potential with hard downward action, 71-74 mph (+2,400 rpm). Changeup is a quality offering, especially when kept down in the zone, 76-78 mph with up to 17” of run. 

So. RHP Jake Catalano (Brookfield East, WI) is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound right-hander that gives a tough look for opposing hitters. His fastball has some life out of the hand while playing in the 86-88 mph range with over 2,400 rpm and up to 17” of run. The curveball and slider both have quality spin rates, with the CB playing over 2,300 rpm at 73-75 mph and the slider at over 2,500 rpm, 74-76 mph. He kills spin on his changeup, running heavily at times to his arm-side, 78-81 mph. 

So. RHP Justin Schnell (Milton, WI) had one of the louder showings on the entire day. 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with a trim build and room to add strength. Schnell works with a medium leg-lift into balance point before moving in-line down the mound with a slight back knee bend, long reach out of the glove with a ¾ release. The fastball sat 87-89 mph, topping out at 89.6 mph with life out of the hand. Slider showed short 10/4 shape with developing spin, 78-80 mph. Changeup is a quality offering at 80-81 mph, kept mostly below the zone with running action.
