Wisconsin's First 2017 Off The Board: Anthony Schlass Commits To Oklahoma

These days it’s tough to make a big college commitment before the PBR staff gets the chance to lay eyes on you. Even the first 2018 commit in our coverage area (Timothy Borden, Our Lady of Providence, IN) attended the Junior Future Games this summer before recently committing to Louisville.

Well, Anthony Schlass (West Bend West, 2017) did just that and snuck under our PBR radar this summer and made his verbal commitment to Oklahoma in August before we had the chance to put eyes on him. Schlass played summer high school baseball at West Bend West and we didn’t get the chance to see him before the most recent 2017 rankings update. He also wrestles and plays football for the Spartans while continuing his baseball training with STiKS Academy.

Things started for Schlass after he attended a college camp at University of Miami where Schlass said, “University of Miami (FL) told me they were "very interested" in recruiting me after I attended their prospect camp last January.”

Schlass then played his high school season for West Bend West and attended an Oklahoma college camp in August.

Schlass said, “I attended the Oklahoma camp this past August and was offered the scholarship by Coach Hughes that very weekend before we came back to Wisconsin. I knew something was up when I was pulled from a game and taken to the office where he was waiting with my dad.”

Schlass then shortly after made his verbal commitment to the Sooners and the rest is history. We got to see Schlass at our recent Southern Wisconsin Open and he was impressive to say the least. Schlass clearly stands out with his left-handed bat and rivals comparisons to 2016 Arkansas commit Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area). Schlass showed extremely strong bat speed and is highly physical for his age. Currently Schlass plays a middle infield position but looks as though he will grow out of that position and move to a corner position. His bat will clearly play at any corner position and ran a 7.06 in the 60 which should bode well enough to play a corner outfield spot as well.

“I really like everything about the University of Oklahoma. The campus is beautiful, the athletic facilities top notch, and the athletic housing is amazing. However, it really came down to the coaches. I felt comfortable right away and decided that the recruiting process while exciting, it might also be stressful. I can just play now and I'm happy about that. I truly believe the University of Oklahoma will be back in Omaha soon,” said Schlass.

As we enter the time of year when we update class rankings again, I would look for Schlass to be among the top prospects in the state.
