Wisconsin 2019 Rankings: Newcomers

On Monday, we released an updated version of Wisconsin’s Class of 2019 rankings, expanding the list by 25 names. Naturally, there are a good deal of brand new prospects who are making their first-ever appearances on their class’ rankings board, all of whom are presently uncommitted.

In total, there are 25 prospects debuting on the class 2019 board and none are ranked higher than RHP Bailey Banaszynski (Brookfield East). Banaszynski debuts at No. 33 after taking advantage of his thick, durable frame, demonstrating an uptick in velocity this past May. Then, Banaszynski showed a quick arm that produced a heavy 83-86 mph fastball. He paired that fastball with a 12/6 curveball that flashed sharp action, and a changeup with above-average action and feel. We saw the Brookfield East righty again at Badger State where he looked similar, though the in-game results were telling. He tossed a complete game shutout in his lone outing where he mixed in his three pitches well. The intriguing uncommitted righty earned a spot within the top 40 of this list and we look forward to seeing him at Milwaukee’s Top Prospect showcase next week.

Bailey Banaszynski (5.12.18)

Three left-handed arms introduce themselves to the 2019 board, in and around the top-60: No. 50 Tyler Drezek (West Allis Central), No. 59 Alex Redman (New Berlin West), and No. 61 Trevor Samuelson (D.C. Everest). Drezek’s 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame, in addition to his quick arm speed that produces mid-80s velocities, helped land him the last spot on the top 50.

As for new position players to welcome onto the board, some notable names include C Trevor Gustafson (Webster) and OF Nic Wohlfiel (Arrowhead). Gustafson comes in ranked No. 71 and grinded his way onto the board after a highly successful high school season in which he helped the Tigers capture their program’s first-ever State title from the four-hole. He’s showed some promising work behind the plate, but has become more well known for his contributions at the dish. He, too, was at Badger State where he found plenty of barrels and showed off some trademark bat strength.

Trevor Gustafson (3.11.18)

We’ve yet to see Wohlfiel in a showcase setting, but his athleticism stands out almost immediately in center field for the powerhouse Division-1 program Arrowhead – where he also plays safety for the football team. At State, Wohlfiel hit in the three-spot for the Warhawks and is slowly honing his raw baseball skills, making good use of his plus athleticism. He debuts at No. 75 on the 2019 list.

One other name within the top-100 prospects on this board to know is 2B Logan Mantz (Slinger). Mantz is another name on the board we had the pleasure of seeing at this month’s Badger State Battle. There, he regularly produced hard, gap-to-gap contact with bat speed, doing his part to help STiKS take home the tournament’s title. Mantz comes in ranked No. 78 in his state’s class, and is the No. 13-ranked second baseman.
