With the Wisconsin 2018 Rankings updated earlier this week, we take a look at the top newcomers to the list. Expanded to 35 this class has some early makings of rivaling the depth and quality of the 2016 class in the Badger State.
The top newcomer cracked the top 20 with left-handed hitting outfielder Gunner Peterson (Wilmot). Peterson swings a big bat and was a freshman on a Wilmot varsity team that made it to the sectional finals last year. His bat will be highly followed in this class, one that is littered with left-handed bats in the top 20.
Another left-handed bat cracking the top 20 is Kenosha St. Joseph centerfielder Don Goodes. Goodes is a smaller bodied outfielder with speed to stick in center and wreak havoc on the base paths, couple that with his short quick stroke and he looks to be your prototypical top of the order centerfielder.
Several standouts from the Southern Wisconsin Open made the cut as well. Evan Albrecht (West Ben West), Tony Becker (Oconomowoc) and Michael Lepow (Racine Case) all made the top 35 this time. The trio stood out at our most recent showcase this fall. Albrecht is an athletic middle infielder with some fast twitch actions and uses his hands well both defensively and with the bat. Becker is a raw, wiry RHP who showed well above average arm strength for his age. He’ll have to polish up his delivery and off speed stuff but the raw arm strength is already there. Lepow was one of the top catchers in attendance, an unusually athletic backstop who ran a 6.9 60 and carries a repeatable loose bat.
