WIAA Semifinals Lake County Lutheran Advances to Title Game

By Spencer Flaten

APPLETON, WI- Lake Country Lutheran advanced to the Division 3 state title game with a 9-3 win over Chequamegon in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. This will be the 3rd consecutive year that the Lightning will play in a state championship game.

The Lightning’s bats exploded for five runs in the top of the 1st inning, which ultimately clinched the game from the get-go. Andrew Buran and Joe Lipsky both had RBI singles in the frame, while Joe Euclide and TJ Hopkins both had RBI doubles.

Chequamegon struck back in the 3rd inning after a leadoff double and a dropped third strike put men on 1st and 2nd. Wyatt Juneau grounded a shot to third base, which was mishandled. The ensuing throw into the stands allowed a run to come across to score. Sam Lehman doubled to deep left field in the following at bat to drive in two runs and make the score 5-3.

The game didn’t remain close for very long. In the top of the 4th, Lake Country Lutheran plated 4 runs to extend their lead to 9-3. CJ Teske hit a 2 RBI single and Jake Hall drove in two runs with a single (that got some help with an error) for the Lightning.

The Screaming Eagles couldn’t get anything going against LCL pitcher Kyle Lewis. He threw a complete game 2-hitter with 8 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs.

The Lightning will play in their 3rd consecutive state championship game on Thursday at noon. In 2013 they lost the Division 4 championship game, and last year they won the D4 crown in an extra inning thriller. They’ll face the winner of Marathon vs. Aquinas this year.

Chequamegon finished the year with a 21-7 record.
