APPLETON, WI – The Janesville Craig Cougars advanced to the state semifinals with a comeback 7-2 win over Baraboo in the quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon.

In the final quarterfinal game, the Cougars and Thunderbirds were playing for the right to face Oconomowoc in the semifinals.

Alex Marro got the start for Janesville Craig, while sophomore Tom Ginther got the call for Baraboo.

Both teams threatened to score a couple of times early in the game, but neither was able to break through until the 4th. The Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly to deep center from TJ Wagner.

The Cougars’ lineup had been dormant for most of the game, but that all changed in the 6th inning. They batted around and scored 5 runs in a nightmare inning for Baraboo. Kevin Brandt, Trayton Christiansen, and Marro all had RBI hits in the frame.

The damage didn’t stop there, though. In the 7th, the Cougars added two more runs, highlighted by a sac fly from Marro.

Baraboo scored a consolation run in the 7th, but ultimately it was Janesville Craig that was celebrating its state semifinal berth.

Marro pitched 6.1 innings for the Cougars and scattered 6 hits, struck out 6, and allowed no earned runs. Ginther pitched 5.1 innings for Baraboo and allowed 5 earned runs on 4 hits and 6 walks.

Brandt paced the Cougar offense with a 3-for-4 performance with 2 doubles. Griffin Nicksic went 2-for-3 for Baraboo in the loss.

The Cougars will face Oconomowoc in the final game of the day on Tuesday night.
