Today’s unsigned senior spotlight is on Will Helbing of Waunakee HS. Helbing is a returning starter for the Warriors who received all-conference honorable mention last season. The left handed hitting outfielder hopes to lead the perennial powerhouse Waunakee back to a conference championship after winning it in 2010 and 2011.
Helbing has a strong athletic body with wide shoulders. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outfielder shows a physicality to his game that is advanced from his peers. Defensively his arm works in a short action from an over the top slot showing accuracy at 81 mph from a crow hop. Helbing shows excellent foot speed getting out of the box running a 4.08 from home to first.
Offensively the left handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance while using a short stride to get to the baseball. His bat path has some uphill tendencies and creates lift in his swing while hitting off of his backside. He shows a pull side approach producing hard contact with some pop. With Helbing’s physical frame and left handed stick he shows potential to be a legitimate offensive threat at the plate.
Helbing will look to improve upon his lofty .405 batting average from a year ago and take the Warriors to a conference championship.
