Over the next few weeks we will close out 2017 by counting down the Top 10 stories and profiles of the calendar year. Our top ten stories will take a look at some of the highlights at Prep Baseball Report through the lens of the Badger State, including title runs, top prospects, newsworthy milestones and more.

The No. 2 Story of the year is West Bend West going 33-0 and winning the WIAA Summer State Championship.

West Bend West was one of the top teams headed into the summer season headlined by four Division I commits. Anthony Schlass (Oklahoma), Evan Albrecht (Purdue), Nathan Burns (Oregon State), and Jack Thelen (UW-Milwaukee).

The Spartans put up huge numbers all season long averaging near 10 runs a game, posting a team average of .355, and getting on base at an absurd .490 clip. To go along with the offensive numbers the pitching staff posted a 1.49 ERA.

In the state finals the Spartans defeated Franklin 6-2 in the semifinal and beat Marquette 6-4 in the finals.

Oklahoma commit Anthony Schlass was a two way stand out for the Spartans At the plate he went .460 with 12 doubles and a team leading 42 RBIs and a .584 on base percentage. On the mound he finished the year going 10-0 with a .30 ERA.

Two freshman played big roles with West Bend this year in Gavin Hinckley and Lukas Broske. Broske paced the team with a .480 batting average and a .612 on base percentage in 50 at bats. Hinckley hit .333 and posted a 6-0 record with a 1.80 ERA. both players are ranked in the PBR Class of 2020.

Junior SS Evan Albrecht, whos uncle Bill is the head coach, started at shortstop all season and hit .473 with 27 RBIs.

The No. 4 story of the year was the flood of WIAA Summer teams jumping to Spring come 2019. With this trend keeping up WIAA Summer might be in jeopardy beyond 2020 when the WIAA’s lease at Kapco Park runs out.
