LHP Christian Oppor (Columbus, 2022; Gulf Coast State College) comes in at No. 4 on our ‘Most Viewed Profiles’ list. During his time in the Badger State, Oppor transformed himself into a true next-level prospect and he ended his prep career at No. 4 in our states class of 2022 rankings and No. 461 nationally. Oppor first came onto the scene back in the winter of 2020 at the Madison Preseason ID where our staff got our first look at what was going to turn into a special prospect. Despite not being on the mound, Oppor showed off his impressive arm speed during the outfield defense portion of the event, registering a 89 mph high on his hardest throw home.
After his first performance during the winter of 2020, Oppor earned invites to both the All-State Games and the Future Games. While his performances at both events were quality showings, Oppor was just scratching the surface of what we would see from him throughout the rest of his high school days. During his junior year, it seemed like Oppor was hard at work during the offseason and our staff got to see his gains first-hand at the Madison Preseason ID in 2021. Here is what our staff had to say regarding his performance in Madison…
“Oppor started the day by showcasing his elite arm strength in the outfield where four of his five throws home were clocked at 95 mph. But his real impact was made on the mound where he took that same arm strength to top out at 92 mph. It's an extremely live arm that is just scratching the surface of its capabilities. There’s excellent athleticism in his actions that should develop into harnessing a well-above-average three-pitch arsenal.”
After his performance there, Oppor cemented himself as one of the top prospects in the state and he moved up 43 spots in our rankings board as a result. Even with this huge jump in both velocity and our rankings, Oppor did not stop there. Our most recent look at Oppor came during the high school season and there he hit highs of 95 mph in front of our staff, while also showing improved feel for his slider which added even more to his already impressive profile.
Multiple standout performances from Oppor across the country seemed to catch multiple pro-scouts attention and he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft, but he made the decision to attend Gulf Coast State College. Currently in the middle of his freshman year, it seems that he has not skipped a beat since his illustrious prep career as he is inside the top-10 in PBR Florida’s JUCO pitcher rankings and will look to contribute right away at the next-level. Even with reports of his velocity being up to the mid-90s, he still possesses a high ceiling on the mound due to his advanced athleticism, coupled with his projectable frame and he certainly has the chance of hearing his name called yet again in future MLB Drafts.
