Sun Prairie 4, Waunakee 0
APPLETON, WI - Sun Prairie would kick off the 2013 State Tournament and their defense of the state title in the first Division 1 match up of the day against Waunakee. It seemed like the Cardinals would pick up right where they left off scoring three runs in the first inning, on their way to a 4-0 win.
Sam Lund picked up the complete game victory for the Cardinals as the junior right-hander faced just four over the minimum in an efficient five strikeout performance. Lund kept the Warriors off balance all day mixing his 80-81 mph fastball with a 12/6 curveball.
The Cardinals got all the scoring they would need in the first inning. Junior Connor Funnel led the game off with a single. After a hit batter and a fielders choice, Funnell would eventually score on a balk. Carter Brekke then roped a triple over the head of Waunakee right fielder Will Helbing to tally the second run of the game. Junior Ryan Curran would then score Brekke with a sacrifice fly to center.
Sun Prairie scratched another run in the fifth when the double play combo of Justin Krebs and Brian Assalone hit back to back doubles.
Lund finished the game getting AJ Johnson to line out to second for the final out, sending Sun Prairir to the Semifinals later tonight, June 11.
